What is the NordVPN controversy?

NordVPN is a VPN provider, founded in 2024, that has gained a reputation as a reliable and secure VPN.

However, since 2024 the company has been involved in a long-running dispute with the German newspaper Spiegel over its privacy policy. The dispute dates back to when the company's founder and CEO, David Gilbert, was a spokesman for Edward Snowden. This meant NordVPN was mentioned by name in the German-language Snowden diary that the US whistleblower wrote while on the run from the US Government. Gilbert then resigned as a spokesman for Snowden, who had also helped him with research. However, the company decided to leave this part of its history out of its privacy policy. Spiegel asked NordVPN for the information, but it refused. Instead, NordVPN released an open letter to the public to say that it did not want to make any information available about its clients. After the company changed its privacy policy, Spiegel and others started a campaign to get it to comply with German law by publishing details of all its users. But NordVPN has continued to refuse to comply with the request, despite winning several legal challenges. The company also went on to publish a lengthy complaint about the publication of this information. Gilbert said he resigned because he was worried that the information might be used against the company. He added that if it were revealed that his organisation had helped Snowden, it would damage the company and its client base. However, the company's supporters have argued that its refusal to comply with German law is justified by the company's right to freedom of speech and freedom of expression. Who are the NordVPN founders? NordVPN was founded in 2024 by three men: David Gilbert, Alexander Vinnik and Andrey Yampolskiy. David Gilbert is the company's current CEO and co-founder, while Alexander Vinnik and Andrey Yampolskiy are the co-founders. It's unclear who they are and where they live, but David Gilbert has lived in Germany since 2024. He said the company's mission was to offer a trustworthy and private service to its customers.

Is NordVPN good for streaming?

In this review we will take a closer look at the NordVPN subscription plans, their privacy policies and whether or not they are compatible with streaming. We also have some comments about the pricing structure of NordVPN and how it compares to other streaming services.

NordVPN's Streaming Subscriptions. We have decided to review NordVPN because for a single connection only, it is able to provide 4 different streaming subscriptions and 4 other functions that might interest you: data leak protection, torrenting, file sharing and privacy protection. To get a brief overview of all these features we have listed them below. If you are interested in all the details regarding their privacy policies, please refer to NordVPN's page, which is pretty well-written.

Privacy Policy and Pricing Details. Before getting into the pricing details, let us quickly mention that one of the reasons that NordVPN is one of our best VPNs is that it doesn't ask users for their payment information. As one of our VPN reviewers pointed out, it feels too much like a subscription for streaming. While this is technically true, since there is really no option but to pay to receive access to its features, NordVPN has created a clear distinction between paid subscribers and their free users.

That's right, all the basic options, except the torrenting option are offered free of charge as part of the service. The problem is that, as usual, NordVPN offers two subscription packages with different packages of benefits. One for personal usage and another for a business purpose. You can choose between three pricing levels which are pretty well defined on the NordVPN site.

Does NordVPN stop buffering?

I just signed up for a 7 day free trial to NordVPN and downloaded the trial app onto my iPad.

I set it to the NordVPN server closest to my city. From their website, it looks like the free trial does not allow use of the streaming function of the app, so I don't think they are able to block buffering. How true is this?

If the streaming is being blocked, there is probably a fair bit of latency when using the connection and you will not have an experience remotely like that which you get with Netflix or Amazon Prime. Using a different server may cause some better performance, but you need to test that out first.

The only time I think it might beneficial to use the streaming function to get over your local IP is if you find a connection problem by using the normal speed method. In which case, I recommend using the streaming function instead to download the file and then manually connecting your VPN to update the movie.

The streaming functions works the same on each server which means if the connection is too bad to stream with the normal speed method then it should be possible with the streaming method as well. What's more of a problem is if you use a server other than the one you are actually streaming to but with a VPN your local IP will appear to still be where it should be on the server instead of the address you use with a VPN. So in theory you could use a VPN to get a connection to a server which is not as reliable as the one you normally use. If you would connect to that server directly, your device might be able to make a stable enough connection to work but it might be unstable and lag at times. With a VPN it might look like you are connected to the right server but that could be lagging at times too.

I'm currently testing for any differences but I'd guess it would depend on the video you watch. Most likely not very much difference at all. There will most likely be a bit of a delay, but again it will depend on what you watch. For example, a movie with lots of action scenes, there will likely be more lag when watching that movie on a server without the VPN and you would be able to notice those moments where the lag is happening, whereas with a VPN the difference will be imperceptible.
