Does muscle scraping get rid of knots?

Can muscle scraping cause injury?

I was doing an upper body back to abdominal abs workout. During the last exercise, I did three sets of bench presses, one set on each hand, and then the bar was elevated to a higher position on the exercise machine and I started again with that same arm. Now, my left arm (which is still at work from the first exercise) seems to have hurt in that middle part where the shoulder meets the arm. The pain starts under my armpit and goes into the shoulder and continues down the arm. When I raise the arm to do any sort of movement (such as raising my arm toward my head to see how far up it goes), I feel immediate pain. If I continue to lift the weight or use the muscle after I feel the pain, I will be unable to use the exercise. Is muscle scraping a cause for injury? I don't know how much damage has been done but I don't want to continue doing exercises that are injurious to me. When the pain subsides, is it likely that I can return to working out, ie what type of exercise would someone who had this injury choose? And would such injury get better with time? Or would the injury require surgery?

Well, I think if you have an overused muscle that's been injured or strained you should take the weight off to allow the muscle to recover. I would not go back into a bp set until your muscles got a rest period, I'm also pretty sure that your left arm isn't going to go back to working out unless you get a rest period.

If it does not subside with time, if you know a friend that's been injured like that, then maybe your doc should go by your history. But the best thing you can do is to rest the left side and don't lift anything on the left side. If you lift something on the left side again, then stop immediately, let the muscle relax and hope that you don't rupture anything because you're tearing muscle fibers instead of rupturing them. Even then, I believe there may still be a potential for rupture. When you start lifting it again, keep the arm close to your side to make sure it doesn't extend too far and pull the muscle apart.

Don't take the weights too high if you have a tight muscle.

What does scraping do for muscles?

If you go on YouTube, you'll find people doing dozens of scrapes a day.

Are they really working on their muscles, or is it all about the technique? I found a great little article that explained a few reasons why people do so many scrapes. In my opinion, the reasons are pretty good. Some other reasons people do so many scrapes are that they don't understand how to stretch properly, and because they think it's "lazy".

My biggest complaint with scrapes is that I think it's almost always done wrong. Sure, it's probably better for your body than no stretching, but it's also not safe and it doesn't improve your flexibility. The worst part is that it's very hard to explain to beginners how to stretch properly. When someone starts doing scrapes with me, I have to ask them to keep the movements slow, steady, and controlled. That will eliminate a lot of their "oh my god!" and "this feels awesome" moments, which is fine. I don't expect that from beginners, but I expect it from anyone doing "stretching."

Here's what I see most often with beginners when they learn proper stretches. They start with an exaggerated stretch, as if they were trying to tear the muscle in half. They quickly pull their hand back, or they bend over. They're almost always in pain or screaming "oh my god", and it hurts so bad that I cringe and want to yell at them to stop.

After the "oh my god!" moment, they're usually pretty confused, so I try to explain to them what was happening and how to avoid that. Most people actually listen, but some stick their fingers back in after getting screamed at. Then they do it again, and it feels even worse because the first time they did it right. Some people stop and ask me for help. Some will go on YouTube and search for it.

It's amazing how much progress a beginner can make in just a few minutes when they're willing to listen and do things properly. When I see a newbie trying to do a pull up, I don't yell at them. I show them what's happening and say they need to hold onto the bar or doorframe instead of using their wrist to hold on. I tell them what they should be doing, and then they do it.

Does muscle scraping get rid of knots?

I had a minor issue with my back (lower left lumbar area) while on a bike ride. I went to the ER and was given a prescription for ice and anti-inflammatory. The next day I was still sore, and the back still hurt when I walked or sat down for long periods of time. After taking the ice and anti-inflammatory for 2 days I noticed that my lower back was feeling better but I still had a mild ache. I kept up the ice, and it felt better after a few days, and then went away. A week later I noticed that when I bent down to pick up something, it really bothered me. Then when I bent over to tie my shoes, it really bugged me. I thought the problem was gone, and started doing planks every day again. In a couple of weeks, I started to notice the pain returning when I bent down to pick up something, and I didn't feel as flexible as I should. Now about a month later, I have this chronic ache and tightness in my lower back. I notice that when I stretch, it feels better. Should I try to get a massage or muscle scraping to help this situation?

I am sorry you are having this problem. If you think muscle scraping is needed to loosen a knot, you should not hesitate to ask for one. I would recommend doing some more research online and speaking with a physical therapist who specializes in spine care. If you need to speak with a physician, I would suggest one with extensive training in back problems and who practices the new field of Sports medicine.

Treatment options include physical therapy, massage, chiropractic care, cortisone injections, and surgery. You should consider all of these modalities for relief. It sounds like you already have tried all of these treatments and that they are not helping. As with most back problems, the best approach to relief is a multidisciplinary approach involving the whole team.
