I am trying to decide if I should use the free version of Hotspot Shield for my browsing habits. I am in a college library and I find it annoying to have to go through the extra steps to block websites I do not want. The free version of the software only blocks websites, but I have no way of seeing if the website is even blocked.

I have never had a problem with my privacy on the internet, but I am really concerned that some sites are trying to get information from my computer. So my question is if Hotspot Shield is a good tool to use to keep me private on the internet. Does that mean that I can use it with no worries? Hotspot Shield seems to be the only program available to me. I can not find any others that are available.

They probably have a proxy server set up and it is probably used to block the websites. If you want to use the internet in the library, use the proxy. If you want to use it on your own computer, use a firewall. I don't think that the proxy can be used to get information on your computer. I also don't think that it will stop your computer from getting viruses. It is probably used for stopping people from getting access to the proxy.
