What is proxy in WIFI settings?

Should proxy settings be on or off?

Can somebody please explain this to me in simple terms and give a simple example? Why is it the default off when it's really not on? Is it to use less system resources? Or is it to allow users to connect to the internet or only allow certain users to connect to the network? Why would someone want to deny someone access to the internet as it seems you are missing out on loads of useful information by doing this. We've got about 30 servers at the moment all with varying settings. The internet is really annoying if you don't understand how to tweak the settings. I have disabled it as well as a number of other things as you don't need them on this particular server.

This forum post sums up what I think: What you're getting confused about is a different type of "proxy." The proxy you're talking about is an SOCKS server - the kind that runs from a web browser and gets the data from the local machine. That kind of proxy doesn't make any real difference to data connections, and it's totally useless for anything that is not web-based. A common case where it might be useful is a mail client (though even then, SMTP connections are already "tunneled" via an unencrypted port, so it's hardly the first one to try). So I recommend disabling it.

Other kinds of proxies can cause quite a bit of trouble with DNS, file sharing, internet games and other areas, and they are definitely not the default state. That's where VPNs come in. Most modern routers have at least a built-in VPN feature, which creates a virtual private network between your machine and the router. The router can then see the public network as though it were coming from inside the network.

The only reason to put the proxy stuff on is if you want to go from behind a firewall that you can control to the outside world. Since this is most likely the case, then you also want to set the firewall to permit traffic on that interface, and probably also set the port forwarding setting so that it can be accessed on the internal network. There's nothing more you can do than that, because unless you have software that actually talks directly to the device itself, it has no concept of who it is talking to. The firewall simply sees an incoming connection attempt and permits it based on what it considers acceptable.

What is proxy in WIFI settings?

In case your Wi-Fi hotspot has a proxy server. This is done for various reasons.

For security reasons - if you want to protect your browsing session from prying eyes, or keep track of what you do on the internet. You are in an environment where other people have access to your Wifi network - you don't want anyone to snoop on your wireless network. In case you want to change your network settings - if your parents or boss have set up their Wi-Fi with proxy and they don't want you changing it. You're on a public Wi-Fi and you don't want to show your personal info, like your Google Account name. Proxy is the best setting to use when you're in an area with multiple networks. You could be in an office building, or some place like that. If you're connected to one network, and then another person who doesn't have a connection to your first network tries to connect, the two of you will both have the same IP address. This means that if someone is trying to look up your information by using whois, they'll get the same info as you. It's also a good idea to use a proxy for any location where there are lots of devices in close proximity.

Setting up a proxy on your router. If you want to make sure that all of the devices on your Wi-Fi network use the same settings, use a proxy server. If you have a Windows or Mac computer, this can be done with very few steps, and with software that's already installed.

Setting up a proxy server on your router. Most routers come with a web-based control panel. Open the router and log into your account. Click on the Networking tab on the left side of the page. Click the Wi-Fi option. If you are having problems with getting into the control panel, it may because your password has changed. To change your password, click the Reset button next to your username.

Once you're in the Network Settings, click on the WIFI icon in the top left corner. Under the WIFI option, scroll down and you should see the proxy server.
