How do Hypertabs work?

What is HyperTAB?

HyperTAB is the hypervisor technology at the heart of Hyper-V's ability to run virtually any combination of Microsoft operating systems on a single host server.

HyperTAB provides hypervisor virtualization services, enabling multiple operating systems to be executed on a single physical server. It enables you to use the same physical server as a platform for running multiple operating systems or as a platform for running multiple virtual servers. With HyperTAB, you can run multiple operating systems on a single physical server without modifying the underlying hardware. You can also run multiple virtual servers on a single physical server.

Hyper-V and the host server are virtualized using the Virtual Machine Manager, a Microsoft Windows feature that enables you to operate virtual machines (VMs). The Hyper-V host server runs multiple VMs to provide scalability and elasticity to your enterprise workloads. The Hyper-V host server provides four key features:

Scalability. Hyper-V enables you to run multiple VMs on the host server. The ability to scale and increase your compute capacity is critical in running mission-critical applications and is required for high performance computing.

Elasticity. Hyper-V enables you to add and remove VMs to increase or decrease your computing capacity as your workload demands change.

Security. Security controls are enabled to protect your VMs.

How to use HyperTAB to run multiple operating systems on a single host server. This section contains step-by-step instructions for using HyperTAB to install and configure an instance of Windows Server 2024 or Windows Server 2024 R2. If you're using the Windows Server 2024 R2 Essentials edition, see the Windows Server 2024 R2 Essentials deployment guide for steps to install and configure an instance of Hyper-V.

Use these instructions to create a new Hyper-V server host. The host server provides the foundation for Hyper-V; it will be the host on which you run multiple VMs. For more information, see "Choose a host server for your Hyper-V installation."

Note: If you've used a different operating system for a previous Hyper-V installation, you might have an existing host server with an operating system installed on it. In that case, you can simply add the new host server to the domain and create VMs on it.
