How to set up IKEv2 IPSec on Windows?
My friend told me that I can setup IKEv2 IPSec on Windows 7 using Windows 7 IKEv2 Configuration Utility, but I couldn't make it work.
I checked with this site too and even there their article was not working for me. But in case you need to set up a VPN with IKEv2 IPSec, below are the steps to do so:
Open Microsoft Internet Connection Wizard. In the Network settings window, select the Internet option.
Select from all of the following: Connect using dial-up or cellular broadband connections. Connect to another network using these credentials. Select the option labeled Allow others to use this computer remotely and click Next. If Allow others to use this computer remotely is not available in your version of Windows 7, select Create new user account, then click Next to continue.
Set up the following options on this computer. Use a remote access server. Use a local account instead of a domain account. Click Create account to launch the account wizard. Choose any name for the user name, a strong password, and use the Windows logon type (the user name will be something like user). Click Create user to complete the wizard.
The user name should look something like this: xxxusername. X is the computer name or IP address of the computer. Username is the name of the user. You could enter any name for the user name. Username could be the Windows username or it could be your email address. In this example, the user name is my-email and the password is mypassword.
In case of Windows Authentication, the user name has an @ before it. In case of a domain account, the user name might have the username, followed by the domain.
Once the account has been created, the next step is to make it a member of the Administrators group, so that it can manage the network connection. Click OK, then close the user account dialog box.
Does Windows 10 have a built in VPN client?
First of all, thank you for this site.
It's very useful when I'm on the road and trying to figure out something that was so painfully obvious back home (like wifi passwords).
My problem is that most Windows 10 laptops I use have the stupid (from my standpoint at least) WiFi icon (shown below). However, when I'm using a VPN on my macbook it can connect perfectly, with no problems, without having to deal with the popup asking if I want to use "this network" without bothering with that icon. Windows 10 seems to lack any kind of way to turn a VPN connection into its own WiFi network, like it does on mac, and there are only about 2-3 legitimate uses I know for the icon in the first place.
Has anyone else found a VPN client in Windows 10 that integrates so elegantly with Windows as to not include that obnoxious Wi-Fi icon? What VPN clients are worth looking at out there? Thank you again for this site! Krismom. I use a USB Ethernet adapter for my VPN. It gets set as an Ethernet adapter and works for any app that has a VPN feature on it. On the downside it doesn't work well as a Wi-Fi router and often takes more than a few reboots.
A nice bonus is that since the USB wifi adapter is always powered up, this means my laptop can run in airplane mode but still connect for file sharing or whatever. Well, I had been wondering the same thing about how they can do Windows like they are doing it in mobile OS. It is my understanding is that the WiFi option or icon appears in the settings if we are connecting to a secured network. Now I'm just curious that what is that for
And why they have provided the icon
Thanks. The first use for the icon you mention is to connect to a VPN which is required when you access a company intranet (it can also be used for a hotspot like a company provided network at home) to get access to their resources.
How to connect to IKEv2 VPN?
You can use the manual connection wizard to create a connection to the IKEv2 VPN. Please carefully read this document and review all the information required. Failure to follow the instructions could mean a permanent loss of service.
Note: This wizard works with a P2P setup, with your device as the initiator and your access router as the responder. To perform a point-to-point configuration in which both your access point and your device serve as participants in the connection, please see Access Points - Point-to-Point Connection (Manual) Note: Both of these steps are necessary in order to have an IKEv2 connection. You cannot skip this if you only have one of the two above roles.
Create the IKE key (optional, but recommended): Click the Create button. The interface name used for identifying the interface will be "Private Key". If you do not want a password on this interface, type "No password". Type the default value for the peerid. If this value changes, it will need to be reset to the default when restarting the interface. (This is the peer ID in IKEv1, where we have a pre-shared key between us and the remote peer.) If no peerid or any different values were used, the password dialog would show. Click OK.
Choose an authentication method (optional): IKEv2 does not provide a method to authenticate the two parties before establishing the security association. Instead, IKEv2 relies on pre-shared secrets as an authentication mechanism.
You will use either an RSA key pair or certificates from a trusted source. An RSA key pair can be generated by one of the following methods: If you use PuTTY, make sure to change the host type to Local System. PuTTY automatically sets itself to the local system user group for all connections by default.
OpenSSH. If you are using OpenSSH (such as on Raspberry Pis), use the SSH Protocol 2 server certificate in the "Remote" tab of the wizard to authenticate yourself to the other device. You will receive a warning about key exchange algorithms. If the warning appears, then you have an issue with the installation.
