What is red camellia?
A camellia is a member of the rose family, native to China and Japan.
This beautiful flower has long been cultivated for its decorative value and, in recent times, its culinary and medicinal properties. Although red camellias are native to Asia, they are now grown worldwide as garden plants, and are even cultivated as indoor plants.
A camellia is an evergreen shrub with leathery, alternate, serrated leaves that are deeply cut on the margins. The flowers are borne in rounded clusters that usually open from the bottom up, but sometimes from the side down. Red camellias have cream-colored petals that are deeply cut into two lobes. The color of the camellia petals varies depending on the cultivar. There are no true varieties of camellias, and the flowers of different species are very similar.
The genus name comes from the Latin word "camellia" meaning "little cloak" in reference to the shape of the flower petals. The species name "chinensis" means "of China" in reference to its origin. The specific epithet "redulata" means "spread-out," referring to the appearance of the flower clusters.
The red camellia plant is a vigorous grower, growing to a height of 1.5 to 2 meters. It is best grown in a sunny location with deep, well-drained soil. The plant is easily propagated by cuttings, which can be rooted in a moist medium in the greenhouse or garden.
Camellias are highly floriferous and produce masses of fragrant, white, cream-colored, or red blossoms on a long flowering season from spring to fall. Most cultivars are fragrant, with a strong, sweet scent. In the garden, camellias make excellent cut flowers for bouquets and arrangements. Many cultivars also produce attractive foliage and woody stems for topiary displays.
Camellias are used in many Asian countries as a traditional medicine and source of tea. The tea is used to treat coughs and colds and to promote digestion. The leaves and buds are sometimes used as a condiment in Chinese cooking. The fruits are often eaten as a snack or as a dessert with honey.
What do red camellias symbolize?
According to the most common stories and folk tales, ?
Camellia comes from the English word 'hamelya.' The Old Church Slavonic version for it is amila. It means 'to pray.' But what does the red color represent? I guess that would be the blood and death. There are red berries to remind people of blood
Yes, the Greek word krassos (derived from the root for crimson, or from the word krasos: blood) originally meant a dark-colored camellia. But according to Greek mythology, the goddess of love and beauty herself picked out the brightest and tastiest flower of the red ones and hung it on her white breast. She was jealous when Hera looked at the lovely krassos with her great beauty. Hera turned this beautiful thing into a red and bitter berry, and gave them to Cronus.
How exactly did camellias get their name? The most popular belief is that it is derived from the Hebrew hamelya. Others say it is either a form of carolus, hircinus, hircus, or carolina (all coming from Car, Latin), which translates to I give joy, or even from the Old English cammel, which means I carry, referring to the shape of the flower. In any case, the camellia is the only flower with no meaning in any religious texts.
Who created the symbol of the red camellia? It seems likely that the mythologies and the symbolic meanings of each species within the camellia were not set down until some time after the original flowers arrived in Greece and North Africa around 2025 BC. A lot of the symbols have been linked to the gods, or were given other meanings and names as time passed, such as the sun and fire deities in the Egyptian culture.
What else is there? Like other flowers, the camellia has many different versions, with many different characteristics. There are varieties with single petals, double petals, and multiples of those both in shape and size. Some varieties can be everblooming and some require one day. Most importantly, there is the difference between real and false flowers.
What does it mean when you hold a camellia to your heart?
I have thought about that question for most of my life.
I am still unsure of the answer, but I think I do know a little more about it now. What is more surprising than what it means is what the story of the camellia says about people who love each other.
As a child, I remember going to visit friends at their home where the front yard was filled with camellias and violets. In one garden, there were two camellias side by side. As I walked by the blossoms, each bloom would open, one right after another, then close again. That's when I found out the magic of it all. The blossom that opened was the one that my friend loved more. No matter which camellia or violets they were, there was only one camellia that was their favourite.
I knew that camellias liked water, but I wasn't sure what that meant until it rained. The leaves would start to turn green and slowly change colour to the same beautiful emerald green. I also knew that camellias liked full sun and liked to be pruned. Yet, that was about it. I didn't understand exactly why they liked the things they did. Maybe if I had lived a few hundred years earlier, I might have been able to understand it. And I believe that I might know how it is that some people are drawn to the camellia and it's true beauty when we love someone and their love of us shows.
When Jesus was a young man, he had a companion called Simon the Zealot. He spent a lot of time together, but it seems Simon had no interest in Jesus. One day, however, he decided that he would like to try to change his perspective. He asked Jesus to go up into the hills with him so he could learn from God.
This was the first time that Jesus had been invited to go on a religious excursion. But this time, he agreed. He got on a donkey and went with Simon. I imagine that the only donkey that Simon owned was very old and worn out. Yet, Simon's heart was changing.
After a while, they sat down and began to eat, when Simon said to Jesus, Who taught you to follow me?
