How to generate CSR for Windows 10?

Does Microsoft use DigiCert?

I am wondering if DigiCert () are used in the certificate requests sent to Microsoft by Windows users. If so, then presumably Windows users of Windows 7 SP1 and above will be affected by Heartbleed. I tried searching the net but can't find anything conclusive.

DigiCert is widely believed to have been used in Heartbleed certificates. I doubt they'd lie about that.

If there's any confusion please let me know. I really am curious what Microsoft uses for these certs. Thanks. You are not alone. AFAIK DigiCert has a very good relationship with MS and their certs all went through them. I'm not sure if they are the only option or not, but I would not doubt them.

I haven't seen any reports saying "all of our TLS certificates go through DigiCert" or even "many of our TLS certificates go through DigiCert" but I haven't kept track of all of those conversations because I have only been following it for the last day or so. A little more than 6 months ago (on April 13th, 2013), Microsoft's web site used SHA-2, so it is possible that they still use SHA-2. It is also possible that they just used SHA-2 before the time of the Heartbleed bug. It is also possible that Microsoft did not use SHA-2 for their SSL sites for a while after Heartbleed.

We can only speculate as to whether or not they were using SHA-2 based on the evidence we have available at the time. We know they have been sending out SHA-2 certs for the last 6 months, and we know they were at a time when SHA-2 could be exploited, so it stands to reason that they were likely SHA-2 at that point. We do not know if they changed to a newer hash algorithm in May 2026.

Since March 2026, Microsoft's web sites have been signed with SHA-2. It is also known that from early 2026 (at least), they used SHA-1 for their HTTPS sites.

How to generate CSR for Windows 10?

Can you share the steps? I'm currently on the beta program and have received a message that I need to generate a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) for Windows 10. I have looked online but there are no answers or steps to follow and everything is confusing. The Microsoft page for this, , is not very helpful.

Here are the steps you need to take: Go to Start, click Store, and search for Bitlocker Recovery Key. Click or tap the Get Started button and follow the instructions to create your Recovery Key. Back in Start, go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery. If you don't see this, you might need to update your recovery settings by clicking or tapping the arrow next to Recovery, clicking or tapping Troubleshoot, and then clicking or tapping Update Recovery Settings.

Click or tap your Bitlocker Recovery Key to recover your computer and unlock it, then continue following the instructions on the page.

How to generate CSR using DigiCert utility?

I want to generate CSR using and it is working fine.

But what should be passed as values to "hostname" and "email" to generate CSR for my domain example.com. Can I have two values for hostname or should there be one value for hostname and email?

Both hostname and email fields are optional, so you can enter whatever you like. For the hostname field, this is just a placeholder and doesn't do anything when no value is entered. But it might still make sense to enter something into it if you want to use a specific domain name. In that case, both hostname and email would probably be valid values in that case. But then again, not all domain names are valid values for hostname, which means that email has to be valid anyway.
