Why is VPN not connecting?
My company has purchased a number of Tandberg IP phones to replace some old analog phones.
The phones themselves have installed a VPN client on the Cisco SPA520 and they seem to be working with great speed and I get the feeling it's not just me.
Today I went to a meeting on the phone (I could actually do the meeting with my desktop PC or my laptop) and suddenly it wouldn't connect to the VPN. What is different about today than yesterday or last week that it can connect and suddenly not.
One factor to consider is the new Cisco SPA 520 may not be in an ISA mode, while your older switches (which I'm guessing are still running ASA 5505) may be in an ISA mode. If this is your problem, we would need to check what kind of network and what operating system and what hardware version you're using. If you can provide more details, then someone from tech support could more accurately respond to your issue. I have a user who can't access his office VPN connection on his new C3000. All works fine when he's at his desk in the same building as the office and when he's at home connected to the VPN on his PC. When I've tried to diagnose the problem so far, I've set the firewall rules on his end correctly, confirmed that the settings are ok on the switch and then enabled WLAN on the phone. I get a dialog with "No internet access" and a message saying to turn off the VPN.
I've done all the things I could think of, but I just can't get it working. I've also asked the customer for the router's serial number, but not even that has worked.
Is anyone else experiencing problems accessing the office VPN on the C3000? You are welcome. It does sound like it's an issue with a Cisco product.
The best advice is to contact the support department of the product you have. If there is a problem with hardware or software, they can find out if the user has the latest software version and the correct hardware. That would make it easier for the support representative to figure out why the connection is not working.
Can you check the logs on the VPN server? Is the VPN server set up for any other protocols than the default PPTP? Another thing is to check the WLAN settings on the phones.
How do I get McAfee VPN to work?
1 Answer.
If you see "The selected network is not available" on the Network Settings for VPN tab under "OpenVPN," then a server is currently unavailable. Your network administrator can change the settings to allow OpenVPN or PPTP connections for your computer, if you don't have a specific need for this. He may be able to do this from Group Policy, in Windows XP. However, I recommend that you request that he set up PPTP using the Advanced Mode. In Advanced Mode, network configuration can be applied to individual users (or groups of users), rather than as part of Group Policy.
You must have an active license for McAfee to access the Advanced Mode. If you do not, you will need to contact your Account Manager, by telephone.
Why is my McAfee VPN blocked?
Do you think McAfee has a good security program?
What is your reason for thinking that way? I read in McAfee's press release and comments on Twitter that their VPN is being blocked. Why is this the case? Is McAfee a good VPN or not? The main reason for me to ask the question is because I have McAfee, but not one of the versions that they are talking about. The McAfee product that I have has been around for a few years, but isn't a very good VPN (as far as I can tell).
I know McAfee and their products, so I will answer the question anyway. I think that the problem is that this is a big and very long post, but at least I think that it is. I am also interested in other people's thoughts on the topic, so if you have any comment about this, let me know.
Is McAfee a Good VPN? I'll start with the answer to the question: yes, McAfee is a good VPN. If we look at the information from McAfee on their own website, we see a few things. There are two different categories for features: Security. Accessibility. We can focus on the features that are more relevant for us. These include Firewall (or Network) Security, Data Encryption, Data Loss Protection, Device Control, Threat Protection, and Web Filter.
So the basic feature that we need is Firewall Security. What do we need to know to assess this? The first thing that we need to know is what exactly is a VPN. McAfee tells us that it is a secure connection to a server which is often located in a different location. This could mean a few things. It could mean that it is an actual VPN, which could be a connection between two endpoints over a network. Or it could mean that the Firewall feature is just that, a firewall that blocks connections and/or ports.
When we look at McAfee's website we see that they mention Firewall Security, but nothing about VPN. I searched through McAfee's Support articles for the term VPN, and could not find anything. I looked at their product description and found that they do say that it is a VPN.
Why did McAfee remove VPN?
Why did it take him so long to re-release the software?
There is little info out there on why McAfee decided to remove VPN but we do have a couple of theories.
The removal was just an accident. The team behind the removal were trying to get people using VPN to get busted with the law. This would lead to them getting sued and potentially have their source code taken away from them.
McAfee could not afford to release an updated version of the software without first having their lawyers look at the code before they release it. Since McAfee has no official communication on when they plan on re-releasing this software, it's still completely up in the air. Some rumors had stated that there may be a leak coming in the future but we are not sure about this information.
McAfee was worried that if people continued using the software they would be able to keep their ISP's from knowing who they are by using a VPN and using a proxy to trick the website into thinking they are located somewhere else. However, McAfee did recently add some type of detection for this now.
The problem with this theory is that VPNs can be easily broken down by McAfee, even if there is a legal fight going on the company has enough money to fight this kind of battle. I believe that there is more to the story than this and if we find any info on it soon, we will post the update.
