Should I use Onion over VPN?
How to do it securely
Onion over VPN - It has been a long time since we have talked about VPN but today we are going to talk about how Onion over VPN and which one should you use.
And if you don't want to use Onion over VPN you need to know why you might want to. We'll also have a quick guide about how you might be able to get around the restrictions of Google Chrome if you are trying to use Tor for the first time. So let's start with Onion over VPN and why it might not be right for you.
If you need a VPN I suggest that you start with a VPN that supports IKEv2 or a SSTP server. You need to make sure that when you are connecting your computer to the VPN you are connecting to the right server. The easiest way to do this is to make sure the VPN is running in the background of your computer, and then connect to the VPN. In the VPN Connection window make sure that the connection type is set to VPN only, check the Authentication and encryption settings. The next screen of options is where you specify the Server. Check the box that says automatically select fastest server and select OpenVPN from the drop down menu. This will ensure that you are connecting to the correct server.
Once the VPN is connected, make sure the Tor browser is closed. If you want to use it as a default browser to load web sites, open Google Chrome and make sure that the last option on the Chrome settings is 'Always allow encrypted connections'. Now head over to and make sure that the button called Add is selected. Now click on the button called 'Connect' and the process will start. For this example we are going to use a US based server. In the drop down menu select United States. Make sure the box called 'Open Onion' is selected. You will have to wait a while for the connection to complete. Once the connection is completed the onion page will open. On the left hand side you will notice two buttons. Under the Advanced tab there is an option called 'Incoming data will appear as encrypted'. Select this and click on Save.
So now you are using Onion over VPN.
Is onion over VPN better than double VPN?
I have just been wondering if the VPN and the onion over VPN combo would better than just a VPN? The main reason is my home has some very sensitive things on it, so it would be handy to not have to log in and out of the VPN and have my computers and other devices see my home network as the outside. I don't do anything too "sneaky" when I'm at home, but I just want to avoid any trace of it on my home router logs. The main reason I ask is since I am using a router right now with double VPN set up. I only connect to my router via VPN, but have two VPNs setup with different companies.
I don't even know if there's a way to log IP addresses from my router as well as my desktop, laptop, etc. Do any of you have any experience with this? I could definitely benefit from any input. I'll probably start setting up my router tomorrow. But I wanted to get the opinion of the experts first.
That is a great idea! I will have to give that a shot. I wish I could see what ports are being used on my router right now. I know for a fact they are running PPTP and IPSec. If I can only see the connection, it will be easy to switch from one to the other and see if there is any noticeable difference in speed or security.
Can someone also tell me how I can log the IP addresses from my router as well as my desktop, laptop, etc. You can also look at what ports your router is using. From the routers web interface you can open a network analyzer. And if you are looking for the ports that are used for pptp and pptp then you can use that software.
I only use PPTP. But I think that the router I have should work well with it. The only problem is that the router is an old Linksys WRT54G and does not support OpenVPN.
I think you'd need a device that has "deep packet inspection" capabilities. This is a common type of feature found in routers, firewalls and IDS/IPS systems.
Is Nord Onion over VPN safe?
Nord is a service that allows you to tunnel your internet traffic through Nord's private network of 100,000 anonymous and untraceable nodes.
A VPN only does what it is meant to do and that is to add an extra layer of encryption between the user and their connection. This ensures that anyone else connected to the same network as you will not be able to spy on you or use any information gathered to gain access to your personal data.
To begin with, VPN services tend to be very expensive and there are not many providers who offer free versions. Nord on the other hand, has been offering free trial of its premium service for more than two years now. To try out this service you need to create a Nord account and then choose between three different packages; Free VPN with limited connections, Nord Free VPN with unlimited connections or Nord Premium VPN with unlimited connections.
You can try out all three of them for free without having to pay a penny. The VPN traffic that comes through Nord will be encrypted but it will not be secured in the way it would be through a VPN provider. Anyone else who is connected to your device, or using the same connection will not be able to see anything. Nord says that while it is 100% safe, it is not totally secure as there is always a risk of being hacked. It recommends that anyone using the service should make sure to take up the right precautions when using Nord.
This could include setting up a strong password, adding two-factor authentication and also using an ad blocker to block any potentially malicious content. How to get a Nord VPN? You can register for NordVPN from the official website. You will be asked to sign up for the free Nord account and then you can choose between the three different packages that you want to try out.
To start using the service all you have to do is create a Nord account, log in and start using it. All of the websites you visit will appear as if you were not on the internet at all. Even if the connection is logged, the data transferred will appear as if you are connecting to NordVPN.
You may notice that even though you are connecting to NordVPN, your device will keep running normally. This is because all the traffic is going through the Nord network and is being redirected from your device to the Nord servers.
