Can you take selenium with thyroid medication?
- Does it give off radiation?
I know that selenium is a healthy supplement but I am curious about its effect on thyroid hormone. Do you know anything about this, or have you seen it reported anywhere? For what this is worth, I am on synthroid.
Comments for ? You can have selenium even while taking thyroid hormone. Selenium helps activate the thyroid and has no negative effects on thyroid function. It does however, have anaphylactgenic reaction and may make you itch.
Selenium as a supplement is well researched, and no study has found it to be harmful. So if taken correctly and safely, it's a good supplement to add to your daily diet, especially if you are having problems dealing with thyroid issues or trying to conceive.
The use of Se as a dietary supplement cannot and should not be confused with taking selenium supplements as a dietary supplement. That's because of the risk. In addition, the body gets plenty of selenium from eating meats that naturally contain it; they contain many trace minerals that support healthy thyroid function that have no known effect on thyroid function when people take selenium as a dietary supplement.
The only dietary form of selenium supplements is the organic, animal-based product known as organic algal selenium. The only other source is the synthetic mineral known as SelenoSil and the synthetic mineral known as selenium dioxide. These are both considered dietary supplements and are often added to the mix of vitamins and minerals added to foods containing food products. They can both cause serious health complications. Selenium from animals and plants may be a potential problem; there are no reliable studies confirming either safety or danger, but there is a large amount of circumstantial evidence for problems when they are eaten in the form of vegetables or seaweed. Synthetic selenium, selenium dioxide and the chemical process used to make it also has its own health risks. Those risks are being ignored.
Selenium can have anaphylactic reactions and is a potential problem if one chooses to eat selenium. Some people even get allergic reactions when they take a supplement of the natural mineral. If it causes allergy, that can also block absorption of the vitamin and mineral they might normally rely on to help support healthy thyroid function.
Who should take selenium?
Selenium tests are meant to be used for integration testing (web-driver testing). The reason you see so many test failure are: they are running in parallel instead of in series. Some of the tests are slow/time consuming (i.e reading from DB), they could be refactored out.
They were written at a time when some of the older technologies still required some manual configuration. Your project uses Spring/JPA/TestNG/Guice/JDK 1.7 - and you need JDK8 for writing JVM selenium tests You can easily add a selenium suite as part of your CI workflow if you wish to keep track of your automated acceptance/debug tests and perform manual inspection on failures. For a more comprehensive list of reasons why Selenium tests may fail, refer to my earlier answer on this very topic.
How much selenium should I take for thyroid?
I'm on a natural thyroid medication that I've been taking for about a month.
The doc put me on the dose for hypothyroidism, but I'm not under any stress, and am very active.
The issue is, I'm having muscle cramps and fatigue, and my hands are so swollen they're starting to hurt. Is this related to the selenium? I'm taking 20mcg daily of selenium. I'm afraid to take more, but want to know if I should.
I was thinking about going up to 100mcg daily. But I don't want to go over the recommended daily allowance for selenium.
If it's not too far off topic, does anyone know about anything else I can do to relieve the pain and cramps? I'm going to a chiropractor next week. Maybe I'll get something to help with the swelling.
I have been on the t4 level for over 3 years now.and ive only had one incident where I felt tired.for 2 days and was a little dehydrated.but thats all.now I take 30 mcg selenium in the morning and also before bed time.i am very active and I guess I could just be on the top of the food chain.but even then.i was not in danger.but thats just me.so I would go with what your doctor gives you.but also research for yourself.i like reading books and also going on line to check things out.good luck.
You can go by a lot of variables for thyroid levels, but most people (who aren't at risk for thyroid cancer) can handle selenium well. However, it is better to be cautious with your iodine, iron, zinc, magnesium, and other supplements, as each of them can cause a severe reaction if taken with selenium.
I would take the highest dose of selenium that is safe. I am taking 80 mcg per day and my son is doing fine with the same amount. Take it for a few weeks and then see how your body reacts. It may be that your body just needs more selenium than you are already taking.
I'd try taking 50 mcg a day for a few weeks and see how your body reacts. If you notice any side effects (such as nausea), then take a lower dose and increase again.
