Why is my computer saying I don't have permission to access?
I'm not sure if my computer is having issues with downloading files and saving it to the desktop or what's going on, I'll write down what's happening and my steps so you can see exactly what I am doing.
Any help would be great! Background: I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I have two users (me and a secondary) set up on this computer. (You don't have to know about that) I just started experiencing this issue the other day after updating one of my programs. Before this update, it would always ask for my permission when I tried to save any files in the computer and it wasn't really an issue because I still could see all the files I wanted to keep without having to give the "permission" After the update, I started having a lot of issues. First off, the system didn't ask me for permission anymore when I tried to save a file on the desktop. Not even the recycle bin folder which has files I know I made the permissions clear for. I'm also not able to install updates anymore. When I go to download the update it says I don't have permission to access someplace. If I try to run the app as admin, it then will say I don't have access. Same issue for apps I want to download off the web.or any third party apps at all.
I was on my computer doing some of my work last night and didn't notice any issues with saving anything. When I got home today (it's about 11pm), I noticed on the desktop not only do I not have permission to save things, but I also have the desktop all jumbled up. Most of the icons are missing, the pictures were there but are now messed up and so are the folders that they were in. The same happens in the recycle bin. I can't even see that folder anymore.
There doesn't seem to be any other people using this computer that I can think of (unless they didn't notice any changes since I made a couple of the updates).but, I'm not really sure how to tell if the other person or anyone else is accessing this computer at this time. I have the latest anti-virus and antispyware installed. It's not an issue on any other internet connected device I have.
How do I fix permissions denied in Windows 7?
If you have a shared drive that has a folder under it that you need to change permissions to, such as a folder within an image or music folder, sometimes it won't change the permission even though Windows does.
If you need to change the permissions on the shared folder, please make sure that the appropriate user account owns the folder that you are changing the permissions to. Below is a list of permissions that you can change on the directory itself. If you need to change permissions on a different folder/directory in the shared drive, I will cover that below.
When you right click on a folder or file, and click the Properties/Folder Properties tab, you'll notice there are two checkboxes in the Permissions section: You also have the ability to set permissions for Everyone, Authenticated Users, Incoming/Outgoing Networks, and Your Name. In the Permissions window that opens up, you'll be able to set read, write and execute permissions based on what you want others and yourself to be able to do. These permissions are similar to Linux permissions. This allows everyone to be able to read the file but only members of the 'membership' group could write. Note that by default anyone with the 'owner' level privileges can modify the permission settings - not exactly what I want most of the time.
In the example above the memberships would only be allowed to Read the file. You could add or remove the write permission to allow them to modify the permissions of the file or folder. By default, this permission will be denied for everyone else, except the person who made the change. That way the person who made the change can be trusted, otherwise they wouldn't have been allowed to make the change if they wanted to keep their own rights as well.
By default Windows doesn't do anything to hide your files, meaning everyone can see them. If you'd like to add files to the group of people who can't see the file you'd either need to 'lock' the file with another method such as Locking it with the built-in security software, the use of BitLocker (a built in feature of Windows), or with Microsoft's file encryption method (S/MIME - Server Message Internet Mail).
