What is a server real life example?
- the problem with the question
I have been trying to make sense of this question in my head.
What is the question really asking? Is it asking for an example where you can use a server as a real world example? I haven't found a single instance of this being asked. I know Stackoverflow doesn't need to be a classroom.
There is a server real life example in the paragraph: An example of these types of servers is that of the company which delivers food and beverages to companies around the world. Its servers can communicate via computer systems.
In my opinion, the question should simply be closed as "too broad". It's simply asking the community to hand out a short snippet of code here and there without any context. In general, SO only provides code snippets when someone specifically asks for it.
Edit after OP responded below: It appears the OP's main goal was to collect all the server examples they could find and display them in a list. Perhaps the OP isn't asking too broad, but the question does not show how the author attempted to narrow down their examples. It seems the OP just wants to fill in the blanks themselves.
What are examples of servers?
Your web browser. Your mail client. The network you connect to over the internet. Your mobile phone. Your car navigation system. All these are "servers", but they're also your "client".
Most operating systems have a daemon process that is in charge of maintaining a system log, managing processes, and other things. This can be thought of as a server for the system.
Your network interface may be considered a server for your computer. This may be a router or a wireless access point or it could be your computer's own built-in NIC.
Your printer is also a server. There are many more, but the point is that anything that runs on a computer is a server. A dedicated server is a single machine dedicated to running one particular service. You have a dedicated web server, which is a single machine which has nothing else running on it but a web server. You have a dedicated mail server, which is a single machine which has nothing else running on it but a mail server. You have a dedicated file server, which is a single machine which has nothing else running on it but a file server. And so on.
What is the most common server?
I'm not entirely sure what the most common server is, but I imagine it would be one of the larger gaming ones.
This is what I found out: World of Warcraft (WoW) - 13%. Counter Strike Source (CS) - 6%. Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos (WAR) - 3%. Starcraft (SC) - 2%. Starcraft 2 (SC2) - 2%. Counter Strike (CS) - 2%. But then I found out that's just from the server I play on, and there are servers with far more than those. What I'd like to know is how many servers there are, where they are located, how many people play them, and what kind of people play them.
The most popular game in the US is MOBAs. I haven't heard of any big server hosting one, though. The only big game I've seen hosted on a big server is Dota 2. They also have a lot of sub-servers that host other games.
In some regions, the two biggest games are League of Legends and Dota 2, but the numbers are pretty close. In Europe, League of Legends is the most popular game, while Dota 2 is the most popular in China and the Americas.
How many servers does there currently exist? I've never had to count servers myself, so I don't know the answer. I do know that you can find out for yourself by logging into a game and checking the number of players on each server.
EDIT: I figured I'd add my own answer, since I was the one who originally asked the question. There are currently 8,638 active game servers. Most of them are single player games, but there are also a lot of PVP servers. If you'd like to play with me, I can invite you.
There are currently 1,100,000 active users playing games in the world. Of those, 45% are playing MOBAs and 10% are playing ARPGs. MOBAs are mostly played in China and Korea, with the Americas and Europe having about the same amount. ARPGs are mostly played in the Americas and Europe, with Asia having the smallest percentage.
The most common server is Azeroth/Battlegrounds.
