How do I stop Netflix from tracking VPN?
When Netflix first launched their app on iOS in 2025, it automatically connected to your home WiFi.
Now the same is happening with the Android version of Netflix.
So now both my wife and I on Android can use our own IP addresses to connect with Netflix without any issue. The benefit to both of us is that it makes our Netflix experience much more personalized. This is one more service that we do not need data from.
One problem that I've had was that when I use the VPN, it breaks all functionality on my device. I'm always connected to our VPN, even when traveling and then suddenly I cannot get Netflix working. Even though the app says Connection was lost, please try again.
I've searched far and wide for answer, and all of the solutions are really convoluted. The way that these solutions operate is by using the Android system settings. There are two ways in which we can try and fix the problem. One way to remove the network name from our DNS servers and another is using the mobile broadband network tethering mode in the system settings. Let's see what each option is:
VPN DNS Servers on Android. Step 1: Disable DNS server. To achieve this, navigate to System > Network & Internet > WiFi.e. On the bottom-left of this screen, there's a toggle button labeled Advanced WiFi Settings, tap it to open the next screen. On this screen, it should look like this (you can see an image of how it should look). Here you need to uncheck Use as DNS server. This is how my WiFi DNS servers turned out to be : 45.67.89
Step 2: Change DNS server settings. It's time to change the DNS settings on our device. On Android, if you don't set a DNS server manually then the default setting is set to Google DNS, which is a good guess at Google's infrastructure.
In my case, I'll be fine if I set it to OpenDNS, but it's still good to know how to do it so that you'll be able to make the right choice if needed.
Why does Netflix keep detecting my VPN?
I don't use a VPN for Netflix - I connect to my country (United States) instead, and my VPN doesn't have any effect on my Netflix account. So why does it keep saying that I have used a VPN when I'm connected to the US? This also happens even if I am actually logged in and streaming Netflix via my ISP.
@mj: yes I think so but with the new release of the VPN-client I would advise all to give it a try. It is still in beta testing and should be very stable. You can install it easily in many linux distro from there official website as well. I use it right now and it is pretty stable.
That's awesome! And thanks for letting me know about this. It seems a bit complicated though, and I'm not sure how to change country for Netflix to the country of my choice. Where did you learn how to do it, or are you just guessing what to enter? What's the easiest way?
TerenceFeb 5 '15 at 19:32. Well you dont have to do anything but just use vpn and it will automatically set the country by default. When not using a Vpn your speeds are much better and when you get down it will just disconnect. If you get a better VPN later we hope it fixes all issues for it
mjFeb 7 '15 at 0:41. Are you able to explain how it works in more detail? I didn't understand what you mean by "set the country by default." Can you explain this? - TerenceFeb 5 '15 at 19:35. This is very simple. It will detect your country ip address automatically (If you have a router that allows vpn connections). There is a settings tab in the client which has all the information you need like the country code, etc.

Can Netflix detect VPN now?
How about geo-blocking?
Is Netflix able to detect the use of VPNs and other methods to bypass the region restrictions on movies and TV shows? The most likely answer is yes, but it's not clear what Netflix does with this information. As Netflix grows and adds more countries to its service, it's obvious that the streaming video giant needs a way to filter out users who are taking advantage of VPN services, or any other method of changing the region that they are in.
When users travel, their IP address changes and Netflix will be unable to determine the location of the user. Instead, Netflix will report a location based on the city or country from which the user's IP address is assigned, and this may not be accurate at all.
Netflix VPN Detection. As stated above, Netflix uses IP addresses to determine whether a customer is in the country of their choice or if they are located somewhere else. This seems to be the only method Netflix uses to identify VPN users. This is how Netflix detects the use of VPNs:
A VPN (virtual private network) connection changes the IP address of the device that is used to connect to the VPN server, making it appear as if the user was physically located in a different place. Netflix then determines which country the user is in based on the IP address. If the user appears to be located in a country outside the one he or she chooses, Netflix will detect that the user is using a VPN and offer a warning about using an unauthorised server.
This is a problem because, in many cases, Netflix customers do not realise that they are using a VPN to access the content they want to watch. Therefore, the use of a VPN could be considered as fair use, just like the use of an Apple TV to watch content that is not available in the UK.
The best solution to this would be for Netflix to change their geo-filtering methods to detect VPNs. The use of a VPN does not allow people to circumvent geo-blocking; however, some VPN services offer multiple servers in different countries.
The second option is to allow Netflix customers to access the content they want, and block all the content that they do not want. By doing this, Netflix would save money and make less money from people who have made a conscious decision to use a VPN to access content that is not available in their region.
How do I get Netflix to stop detecting VPN?
I read all these threads and tried to follow all the answers but so far no success. Netflix has me blocked from seeing anything until I disable the VPN or get Netflix to unblock me in Chrome. I am on Windows 8 with an Asus PC with Windows 7 starter OEM software on it.
It says that I'm using a VPN server. There is another way that could work, so if anyone knows how that might be helpful I'd like to know how. I've tried to go to Netflix via Safari.net but it still blocks and that leads me to "unable to connect" then eventually takes me back to the home page.
Here is my current list of info: Tried a new VPN and same issue. I am able to see it with Chrome. There were times when it didn't work either. Then as soon as I disabled it from chrome or whatever it didn't work for more than 20 minutes. Now I've restarted my computer twice and I don't know if the Netflix will work if I can't connect via the VPN. If I did, then the Netflix says I'm using a VPN server and then they keep blocking me from watching any videos. It's been a horrible experience that has caused me to lose all my patience.
Windows 8 Pro, 64 bit. My ISP gave me a Windows 7 copy and I haven't gotten the Windows 8.1 updates yet. I was using VPN but I had to switch providers and the new one is not blocking. I think the Netflix still is because it doesn't want to go through the Windows firewall so I just need to figure out how to disable the Windows firewall and I'm good to go. I tried every type of solution I could find and there are so many that make you feel like you're doing something wrong. It's a pain.
Hi
I have the same problem when connecting to netflix through a Cisco ASA device as a client and a Netgate device. After disabling the VPN with chrome and rebooting - the network is shown in my network settings correctly again, but now my netflix app does not connect as well to netflix anymore. I get a message that I am using an insecure device.
I checked and my windows 7 starter OS installed.
