How do I become a tester with no experience?
How do I get an app into the App Store?
Are there any testing tools that can make this easier?
Answer by Eric, CEO of TestFlight. Great question! There are a number of ways to get started as a tester. First, you need to figure out what you want to test. Do you want to just get involved and see what's going on under the hood, or do you want to help developers improve the experience for your customers? In general, if you're interested in helping out with something, you'll probably want to go with the latter.
To get started as a tester, I recommend you start by writing some simple apps and testing them. If you're interested in helping out with apps, you can download a few free apps from the App Store and start testing them. You'll need to be careful, as there are a lot of different free apps and most are very low quality, so you'll want to avoid getting sucked into testing bad apps. It's also important to get a feel for how apps work before diving into testing. Try to avoid writing tests against apps you have no idea what they do.
I've also found that you can get a better understanding of what apps do by working with an open source framework called TestFlight. This is a simple application that's designed to help you write and distribute apps that automatically include your own beta testers in the testing process.
If you want to help out with testing, you'll probably want to learn some of the basics of iOS programming. In order to do that, I recommend getting a copy of the free Apple iOS Development Environment.
Answer by Aaron, iOS developer. I agree with Eric. First, I recommend you get an account on TestFlight to start playing around with it. That's where you'll learn a lot about how it works.
Next, try out some of the tutorials on Codecademy or take a look at a few of the resources available on the web. For example, you can read a blog post I wrote about making a simple app, and you can download a few apps and try to write tests for them.
Once you're familiar with the basics of iOS programming, you can start looking into more advanced topics.
How to get manual testing job without experience?
I have very little experience with the technical side of life, yet I'd like to work in IT. How can I go about doing so? I'm not really sure if I should just start working at a local company and find out through experience, or if I should look for an agency who hires for manual testers and find out that way. Which is better?
I have a basic understanding of Windows 7 and an iPad, which I use. I was thinking about learning HTML, but I don't know what I'd do with it. What kind of testing would I be able to do? How could I get a job like that?
This community is really great and I'd love to find out more about this career path. It's definitely easier to find a job by just working for a company. There are plenty of opportunities that will require minimal experience. I personally know a few people that have worked on small projects at big companies that would never have made it at a smaller company, but just because you are able to get a job as a tester doesn't mean you are qualified for the job, or even suited for the job.
If your goal is to become a "tester" and NOT an "IT professional", then yes, it's easier to work for a company. You don't have to "learn" anything, and you'll get paid.
However, if you're looking to learn all of these things, then you should not work for a company. If you're going to learn something, then you need to do it. It's not that easy to go from zero to a "professional" in a short period of time.
