Why do we use proxy instead of firewall?
Do you use a firewall or not, which ruleset will protect you from a DDoS?
I like your concept to install a firewall, because this is the first step how you can protect your network and your pc/server but why do we need proxy in front of our firewall if it will be only a protection against ddos. So, do you use a firewall or not? If you don't, what is the next stage after install a firewall.
I was using proxy for years. I changed to IPsec VPN to a firewall/VPN. No more proxy.
As soon as you open any port in firewalls/IPS you can get attacked. So I think firewall and VPN are needed for protecting against DDoS.
We use a proxy on the router to connect to a few sites that we would never normally use. We have a web application filter which is on a virtual dedicated server with its own IP and subnet. Any access to it comes through the same IP. The proxy then forwards these requests to the virtual server. So it's all running on an internal network behind the router but the users seem to think we're using a modem as the gateway.
Yes, it's the same IP, but it has nothing to do with the Modem itself and it is actually just passing requests through to your internal network. What you're describing is basically a reverse-proxy. You could set up a reverse-proxy instead of the VPN. The advantage is that you only have 1 IP address for both the VPN and the proxy. You don't have to mess around routing tables to figure out which device should forward the request.
You can set up various rules like: if the incoming IP address is the address of the client - forward the traffic. If the incoming IP address matches the IP range of one or more IP addresses configured under the server/application - forward the traffic.
Do I need a firewall if I have a VPN?
Does anyone know if you need a firewall as the basis of a VPN connection.
For example, we have to access a website from our VPN device and they are blocked due to the fact that there is no firewall installed, does this mean you cannot use a VPN as your internet connection? I have tried to set up a small server and connect my IP address to the VPS I have created, However I have done this with no success. Is there something I am missing out with the setup? I tried using iptables to forward specific ports to the new machine but when attempting to connect it keeps connecting back to my main IP address.

Firewalls are just software tools, they don't add any kind of technical "impedance mismatch" into existence, unlike for example routers. The only thing in this regard is that on a LAN with an Internet firewall, you need to make sure that incoming packets from the Internet do not go through this firewall in order to reach your devices on the LAN, while on the other hand you need to make sure that incoming packets from the LAN side do not go through the Internet firewall in order to reach the Internet: both are important. This is where VPNs enter the game. The VPN connection will be set-up between your computer and the LAN or VPN gateway box, such that packets exchanged between the LAN and the VPN device appear as if they were originally destined for that box. For that reason, you do not need to consider any firewall issue: it doesn't change anything about the forwarding rules!
In particular, since a VPN connection can also provide security for the entire (or a subset) of traffic exchanged between you and the remote service, you certainly do not want your firewall to do its job and inspect packet contents at any layer to determine if you're allowed to receive or send a packet.
What is the difference between a VPN and a firewall?
A VPN will provide the highest level of security, but it also takes a lot of time to set up.
A firewall will give you very quick and efficient protection, but can only protect what is in front of it.

Is proxy the same as VPN?
I'm a novice at this and new to all this.
Sorry if my questions are not clear enough, it's my first post here When I use proxy with my phone. The proxy server that I use is: However, I see that it's more like VPN(I could use that site to find IP addresses but I'm confused with the difference between VPN and proxy) because for the site I mentioned above, I had no issues using it when I was abroad and I needed to bypass the restrictions on Google Play and other apps on iOS. But since I'm in the U., I should be able to do that without any problems right?
Any links or resources would be helpful. Thanks! VPN stands for Virtual Private Network, it's a layer 2 concept which translates a physical network on the host (laptop/desktop/router/etc) to one that looks different to other hosts. Proxy has nothing to do with VPN, proxy works by hiding or manipulating the user's access to the internet, proxy can be used by any application/system on your device. It's just like any other networking layer and as long as the proxy hides the fact that your device is actually accessing the internet there shouldn't be a difference between VPN and proxy.
