What month do you plant camellias?
----Original Message-----.
From: Susan.Scott@enron.com Hello! I want to start a garden full of camellias, they have always interested me since childhood. Unfortunately in my region they are not easy to find, and I can find almost only hybrids or cultivars, which will be out of reach for me if I want to buy them. There is an orchard with dozens of camellias where I live but these are not on sale and if you want to buy many plants of one kind, you have to pay too much. My question is when to buy these plants, I've been reading that they must be planted immediately after winter, so I suppose that the ideal moment to buy these plants is in autumn, but I would like to know the truth. Thank you in advance! Hi Maria! Thank you for your comment and question. The best time to plant camellias is in spring and summer. You can ask your local nursery to plant some plants in autumn for you or to buy plants in spring. Plants from winter are fully grown, some may already need some pruning and shaping. If you buy plants in spring they may need some work before planting in your garden. Hi Gia, Thank you for your comment! I think plants for spring or summer flowering should be very healthy and vigorous. Most camellias have flowers in early spring, while others are more late summer or autumn flowering, so we recommend you select varieties that you like the look of! Hope this helps! Hi Mirella, thanks for your comment! We only have plants on sale, usually around May, June and July. But we recommend you try different varieties as each variety has different flowering times. Hi Ciarina, thanks for your comment! Camellias love rich, moist soil, but you don't have to amend it heavily. But if you can add organic matter, you can enrich the soil. They are evergreen, so you don't have to worry about watering them. You can plant bulbs in autumn, but please take care of the right method of planting. The right method of planting is to take root barrier from the nursery before planting and then put it into the garden soil and cover the roots with soil again. Is there any other method of planting bulbs? I don't want to use root barrier and I want to plant them in autumn. Or how about the American chestnut? And it could have been that, in a short time or over a few years, my trees would have filled my apartment, my house. Not quite possible anymore, because my trees are gone, and I find myself wondering what happened to their seed. The mystery of seeds and genetic engineering is, like a lot of science and technology, not always kind to human life. It seems clear that genetically engineered plants (the phrase is a mouthful) do not grow well in different parts of the country, despite being designed to grow in them, so one consequence of seed-grafting technology is that most of us will have no way to feed ourselves. We will be dependent on the agricultural methods of others. On the other hand, I know that a plant-scientist named Michael Callaway, who was working at the University of Connecticut, said that in 1995 he had grown a whole chestnut treesomething that had never before been done. So there might be still some hope of a good outcome for us. I find it disturbing to think of my trees dying. They belong to me, they were put into the ground by me, they have developed through the winter with me. But I can imagine other people in another city living next to a new street, with lots of trees. Their seed will grow in a neighborhood. One of the great things about trees is that every tree I know of grew out of seeds planted by a human, but almost every grain plant did not. Rice, wheat, corn, and so many other grains, as well as potatoes and other root vegetables like beets, carrots, and turnips, do not spread from seed into the wild. The plants seem to have gotten their survival instincts from the soil itself. They go with it. That's one reason there is hope for my trees, that nature is likely to remember how to regenerate them. The other thing about trees is that we share them with so many animals, and not just the creatures that eat them. When I walk in the forest, I hear birdsong, a stream of crickets, an occasional roar of a squirrel getting food, and the calls of small mammals. And of course I see animal movement in my forests and in my mind I see the trees themselves, standing in the sunlight and waiting to be tapped.
