How do I create a PPTP VPN server?
You have to create a PPTP server.
You can download and install OpenVPN and use the tutorial of their website. To make this work you also need an IP for your pc (192.168.123 is not sufficient), a private key that OpenVPN will use and a public key that OpenVPN will encrypt communications with. You can find detailed instructions on how to configure an OpenVPN server here and here (you might also need a static IP, if not see this).
On most Linux distributions you'll find all needed packages in apt-get install openvpn. On Debian you need to add some repositories.
How do I manually create a VPN on Android?
My friend is having issues creating a VPN, and we can't figure out how to make it work.
I know this is easy on the PC, but I'm hoping someone here can help.
I'm using the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4. We are on T-Mobile, but this shouldn't matter. I've tried using both Android's built-in VPN settings, and installing NordVPN. We can log into most web sites that require a VPN, but we're locked out of Hulu and Netflix, and many video streaming sites, etc. We are currently using Wi-Fi and don't have any other network configuration. We're thinking the only solution is to create a VPN and port forward our Netflix/Hulu and other online traffic through it to make it all function. We have no idea what all the settings in the Android native Settings are for VPNs or which server settings would do the best job, etc. I know you can install applications and port-forward them if they are already in your application list. We've seen a lot of guides from places like HowtoForge where you enter an IP address/port in the settings and it shows up in your apps as a new connection.
However, if we can't find our own solution, or figure out the server information in Android's VPN settings, and if possible port-forward our traffic through it, then I'm not sure what to tell my friend. He will tell you that there's nothing wrong with the settings in their phone, and we'll have to figure out what to do.
We've tried looking through other network config options in Settings (Wireless/Mobile Data Network, Data Roaming, Cellular Network, etc.) but haven't found anything that looks like it might work for our situation. We're fairly tech savvy and we've never done this before, so perhaps someone can point us to what should be the best app to try this with?
I understand if we've got crazy instructions/things to try or links to things to look at, because they probably won't work. Just tell us to keep trying :) Thanks for any help! Edit: My friend is an IT nerd and not a regular user, so he might have missed something. Useful Searches. About DroidForums.net
How do I change my VPN to PPTP?
We've all heard the term VPN before, and how it can offer users a safe browsing experience while protecting their online identity.
At first glance, it seems to be a pretty straightforward concept, but if you're like most people, you may have a few questions about using it.
Why would you want a VPN? VPNs are often used to protect against online tracking. This is often done in an attempt to avoid being followed by advertisers. Or, it may be used to avoid your employer seeing your browsing history or what you're doing online. In short, a VPN will make your online activities more anonymous so that others cannot see what you're up to.
But why not just browse anonymously? That sounds simpler. The main reason why you might want to use a VPN is because it's convenient.
Most ISPs allow users to create sub-accounts to split your traffic from other accounts. For example, one of my accounts is for work and a secondary account is for fun. On those rare occasions when I'm using that second account, I'll set my DNS to point to a VPN so that my browsing is protected.
Why use PPTP? PPTP (Point to Point Tunneling Protocol) is often used as the protocol to use with a VPN. It is a very low-level encryption protocol, which makes it more suitable for VPNs than IPSec. But, it's also one of the slowest encryption protocols available. You can use PPTP with OpenVPN to speed up your VPN connection.
If you are using a smartphone or tablet, there are different options for PPTP. Many of the VPN apps available on the App Store or Google Play store will not support PPTP. However, there are some VPN apps that do offer support for this protocol. Some of the best VPNs for Android devices are Hola, and Private Internet Access.
Is a VPN safe? Yes. While it's convenient to use a VPN to protect yourself from prying eyes, it does have its downsides. Any connection over an insecure network can be intercepted and read. The most obvious example is a wireless network. Even if you are connected via a secure wireless network, there are thousands of access points around us that can intercept traffic.
