How can I get a free public IP address?

Is it free to have a public IP address?

I'd like to know if it's free for a public IP address.

I'm not interested in hosting my VPS on it, nor will it ever be part of a VPN connection. I just want the ability to use a public IP to make sure I can SSH into my VPS whenever and from anywhere. Is this possible on AWS?

An AWS::EC2::Instance has an IPV4 public and an IPV6 public. The public IP addresses are charged by usage. If you just use those IP's for SSHing, there will not be charges. You can enable the Elastic IP addresses and this will provide the IP address for your instance but you will not get any dynamic DNS updates. This may be useful though if you want to SSH to the instance from another computer or host.

How can I get a free public IP address?

You can only get a free public IP address from your home network, and if you're using a router or modem that you don't own you'll need to contact your ISP to have them assign one.

My current provider doesn't offer this service, but I'd love to use it for development. Is there another way? I'm trying to set up an Apache server on my dev machine so I can get access to it from any browser. I've been going around in circles with it, and thought this might be a good place to ask for help.

Here's the situation: I have a Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit laptop. The network cable (and power) came with the laptop and I just hooked it up to the router.

I can't figure out how to get my server to be accessible by an external IP address. The instructions I've followed say to "Create a Static IP address" on the router, and when I do this I get a message telling me it can't find the DHCP address. The router is a NetGear WNDR3700v2, and the server is an old Dell Inspiron 5010 with Ubuntu 9.04.

I could probably get access to the server if I got a free private IP address from a friend of mine who is using a cable modem, but I don't want to deal with that. So I would like to know if there is a way for me to get a free public IP address, which I can use to access the server.

If there's anything else you need to know, please tell me, and I'll post it here. 1 Answer.
Since you are running Ubuntu I recommend you use the IPV4 address of your router as the subnet mask. Since you say you cannot get a DHCP address it means your modem/router has this functionality disabled.

This means that the IP address for your computer will be the IP address for your router's interface. In your case you would need to give your router the address 192.168.

How to test public IP?

My server is on the internet and in order to test its public IP address I am wondering if it's possible to access it using a web browser and have it return the ip.

For example, if I type in the browser (Ubuntu Linux) can I get the external IP of my server? The purpose of this is for troubleshooting problems in my networking because I keep getting different IP addresses depending on the location of my laptop or desktop when I use traceroute. If you are connecting through an external DNS name that you have set up in your DHCP server, it will resolve and give your public IP, even through your ISP DNS name. To do this, open a browser and do a google.com search. You should see a box at the top with your public IP.
