How do I download a VPN on a school computer unblocked?
I have a school computer that's blocked all sites, like Facebook, YouTube, and Google.
I can't access anything on the school site, but can get around this by downloading an app. When I download something like Chrome, I get a warning from my school saying I should not download the app. But the school blocks all apps except one, which is what I'm downloading.
The school will have security concerns if you do so, especially if you are not at school. Many schools block certain things because of security concerns. I recommend contacting a parent or administrator and they can tell you what to do. They may also be able to set up a VPN for you.
I just go into network connections on the desktop and click on "edit connections". Then I set the properties to make it look like I'm going to work on it, then I click on "wireless networks" and set my VPN connection properties, then press ok. That should get it to connect without being blocked.
If the school's firewall is blocking things, I would get in contact with a parent or administrator, either on this thread or another discussion forum (like a chat room). It seems unlikely they would allow the student to install anything on the computer that would change or bypass the firewall.
You would need to call and speak to a trusted person within your school to open the firewall. This means you cannot do it yourself unless the school has allowed you to do so.
I have to do this, in the school, because when I am not at school, I use to download apps and play games. And the school has a firewall that will block any app that can do this. I am not trying to say that it's not a good idea, I'm just saying that I have to get around the firewall. So, I would really appreciate any answers!
You need to contact someone from inside the school.
What free VPN works for school?
I am a teacher and my school is on a secure network.
My current VPN software is not working for school use. Can anyone recommend a free VPN that I can use for school?
Try Tunnelbear or ProtonVPN. You can get them for free if you are connected to the US, EU, Japan, South Korea, or New Zealand.
There is also no cost, and a pretty good one, is Hotspot Shield VPN. It has a large selection of servers, is easy to use, and is very good. They also have an Android app.
How do I unblock VPN from school?
You can set a DNS servers for your device.
If you want to unblock sites that use blocked DNS look at My DNS page. This article does not cover any of the following options:
Which VPN Server? There are different types of VPN servers and I only cover a few below. For more information on each type of VPN please refer to the table.
The table is very high level and gives an idea of how each type of VPN work but not too much detail on what each mean. For example an IPSec VPN is similar to a standard SSTP VPN server but is only built into newer Operating Systems like Windows 10. Other examples may include Hotspot Gateways which can appear very similar to a VPN as they will connect clients to another network without allowing you to see or connect to the network they are connected to. But they do so at some hidden price.
Note that my table covers only some of the commonly used VPN servers. I would highly recommend reading my tutorial on how to choose a VPN. I don't consider the table here to be exhaustive but a good base for choosing a VPN service.
DNS Servers and the reason for block of DNS in schools. Before we get started with configuring these DNS Servers you need to understand why this block happens. The Internet contains various types of IP address ranges each with a special type of protocol (DNS and Email to name a couple) associated with it. When we go to the internet and try to find a website or email the router uses the internet address associated with it.
When an IP address on a block is requested by the router there may be many different reasons. Sometimes when someone gets a new computer or accesses the internet from a different location there may be an IP address in use before the user tries to access it. In such situations the default address (192.168.254) is configured as the local reserved address which means if an IP address is in use then it will give up that IP address and go to the default address of 192.254
In schools, one method to prevent this conflict is to block the whole DNS range (169.254)0 - 169.254)255.
