Does an iPad have a firewall?
(No, it does not)
I asked this question on a web site the other day, and had interesting comments about firewall detection on a mobile device. So I thought I would put a post here on what does a firewall mean for a mobile device? When you have an IP-based internet connection to your desktop, it is important to know where that data is going. Data will be going to servers of course, but what is interesting on mobile devices is that all of those servers need to reach your device. And by need to reach, we mean that you want the server to reach your device if something bad happens. For example, the phone company may block the IP address of a certain server that provides a service, so it may take quite a bit of time and/or money to update the server so that it will no longer get blocked.
Data is sent from your home network to a server in a data center, and then that server sends the data to a server in the country where your mobile device is located. On a PC the data would travel from the server in the data center to the server in your country, but on a mobile device the data will actually travel over several locations.
The issue with many types of security is that it is set to a particular location in the world. For example, it is set to the location of the company that owns the Internet service for your region of the world, or it is set to the location of the company that owns the data centers that host the websites. If you set your security to block any of those companies, then you might have an issue. Because when your PC is at home, it will normally talk to a company that hosts your data at a server in your country, but on a mobile device, it will talk to a server in another country. So setting your security to block all data that comes from a certain company, or a server in a certain location, is not going to work very well.
A good idea with a firewall on a mobile device is to set it to only allow data from certain locations. For example, let's say your IP address changes from your home to your office. Set your firewall so that it only allows data from the server in the location where your device is located.
Do Apple devices have a firewall?
If you use an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, there is a good chance that you use an Apple device that has a firewall.
This is used to keep out unsolicited messages and other annoyances from entering your device.
The first way to keep out unsolicited messages is to turn off the Wi-Fi and turn on the cellular connection. This will block incoming messages from unknown sources, but it also means that you will not be able to make or receive calls.
To turn off the Wi-Fi and turn on the cellular connection, follow these steps: Press and hold the sleep/wake button on the top of the phone until the screen goes black. Press and hold the Home button on the side of the phone until the screen goes black. Once the screen is black, press and hold both the sleep/wake and Home buttons together until you hear a soft tone. The cellular connection should be turned off. To turn on the Wi-Fi and turn off the cellular connection, follow these steps: The cellular connection should be turned on. Note: You can also disable this function by going into Settings > Cellular and clicking on the cellular data switch. To turn off the cellular connection, press and hold the sleep/wake button on the top of the phone until the screen goes black. To turn on the cellular connection, press and hold the sleep/wake button on the top of the phone until the screen goes black.
