Can I use my phone number to find my Apple ID?

Can I use my phone number to find my Apple ID?

The original iPhone had a numeric dial pad that allowed you to choose the phone number of a particular contact and have that number dialed on your iPhone.

This has been disabled in most of Apple's new mobile products except for the iPod Touch though Apple users can still use it by connecting their iTunes accounts to contacts saved on an iPhone or iPod Touch.

If you know someone else's phone number, you can use the Find My Friends app to find out their Apple ID. Find My Friends will show which phone number is associated with your Apple ID account if you select a contact in the app. If the contact number that is associated with your Apple ID was assigned to an iPhone 4S or 5, you will also get a notification.

If you don't want your friend's number to be used for this purpose, you can turn off the phone numbers shared in your contacts in the Settings app. See How do I turn off my phone number? for more information.

How can I access my Apple ID with a phone number?

You can't access your Apple ID from a phone number.

The only way to reset your Apple ID password is to use your own computer and Internet connection.

If you lost your iPhone or iPod Touch, you may need to recover your Apple ID in order to restore it to another iPhone or iPod Touch. The iPhone or iPod Touch requires a Wi-Fi network connection in order to use Find My iPhone. If you lost the device, try locating it. If you have an Apple Support account, check with Apple Care for assistance.

Note: You can only restore your device if you know your iTunes password. ITunes requires a Wi-Fi network connection in order to use Find My iPhone. You can't access your Apple ID with a phone number.

How do I recover an existing Apple ID?

This article explains how to recover your existing Apple ID.

You can create new Apple IDs, and use them to sign into your iCloud, iMessage, or FaceTime accounts, but if you already have an Apple ID, you need to be able to restore it. This article explains how to do that.

This guide uses the example of a user named Jane Doe, and explains how to restore a preexisting Apple ID. If you have a different account name, email address, or phone number, replace those values with yours in the steps below.

Visit www.apple.com/icloud/restore to get started.

To recover an Apple ID, go to the web page that says "Create a new Apple ID." Click the "Get Started" button. On this page, under the Your Apple ID heading, enter your email address and then click the Continue button.

On the next page, enter your Apple ID email address as the "Name on this account" field. Then type your password to sign in. If you have already created a new Apple ID, type your current email address into the "Email address" field, select your current password from the "Password" field, and then choose a new password. Then click "Continue."

When you finish setting up the account, the account settings page opens in a browser window. A pop-up notice at the top of the page tells you that you will receive notifications related to your Apple ID.

Next, you need to verify your identity by answering several questions. Click the link that begins with "Verify your identity." Enter your answer to each question, and then click the Verify button. A message will appear after you've completed the identity verification. Click the "Continue" button at the bottom of the page to complete your identity verification.

If you already have an Apple ID, you're done. If you don't, you're done after you create a new Apple ID, but you need to verify your identity first.

You'll need to verify your identity when you want to log into your new Apple ID. The method for doing so varies depending on whether you previously used that Apple ID to access iCloud, iMessage, or FaceTime accounts.
