What does liking a movie on Letterboxd do?

Letterboxd is a social networking site for cinephiles with more than 6 million members.

As the name implies, it's all about posting reviews on letterbox frames. It's the equivalent of IMDB, but for movies that use these kinds of displays. Each review is either a thumbs up or a thumbs down, and includes tags to help narrow in on your kind of film. When you write a review, you can add a rating yourself so folks who like you have an incentive to check out your work.

Like the Oscars or any of the other major film industry awards, there's a "fan award" which comes with prizes based on how many people vote on your entry. The awards are broken down into seven categories: Best Movie, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Original Screenplay. You can get awarded for having the most reviews as well, but you don't have to actually vote to be in the running.

How does Letterboxd do it? The whole idea is to turn traditional movie review sites into recommendation engines, where you vote in exchange for free digital movie posters, posters you like, and gift packs that include free movie goodies like posters and t-shirts. That is, at least, how it works from a strictly practical standpoint. And it works really well. From a technical perspective it's hard to beat, and it was made so well in part because it was built by one of my favorite technology consultants of all time, Jason Fried.

I first got to know Jason through his book, 37 Signals is Dead, but by the time that book came out I had already been exposed to his writing online via articles and posts on Medium. In recent years, his essays have been collected into the excellent collection Why We Disagree About Everything. Jason is a true polymath, and his ideas were always coming from someone with a lot of experience in a wide variety of areas. He has been blogging about web technology since at least 2024, and before that was a reporter for the Chicago Tribune. Before that he served in both the U. Army and the Navy. Jason's work ethic never ceases to amaze me. I could easily see him getting bored at a company with no real responsibility or growth potential, but I've never seen him stop working hard.

I have a feeling that a lot of people voted for Stanley Kubrick's classic, "The Shining" because of it's well known rating of (and by people who don't even own it). I actually am a huge Kubrick fan and own almost every one of his movies except for "Eyes Wide Shut." And after watching it a few times, I did like it! But I still think it's a better movie than the "Alien" series.

I have a feeling that a lot of people voted for Stanley Kubrick's classic, "The Shining" because of it's well known rating of (and by people who don't even own it). What's more is that "The Shining" is only one of the top 5 most watched films on Lbxd. "Sucker Punch" and "Toy Story 3" both have way more views than "The Shining."

There are also a lot of "Top Rated" lists on here. If you look at a few of the other polls, you'll see some really old ones that no longer are around.
