Can you block YouTube channels in 2024?
With an estimated 3.
5 billion people worldwide now watching YouTube on a monthly basis, the site has quickly become one of the most important media sources in the world. But you know who else is important, and getting more so? The companies who own and operate YouTube.
It isn't particularly surprising that some of these companies are doing rather well financially these days. We've seen a number of examples where YouTube has helped propel a company to success, with the likes of Google seeing a large chunk of its income from its YouTube properties.
The other two companies, however, have something of a more complicated relationship. Take Google for example. Although most of the income from YouTube currently comes from Google, advertising revenue still accounts for the vast majority of what Google makes from its YouTube properties, and advertising spend is continuing to rise each year. This should come as no surprise, considering that it's Google that manages YouTube, and in turn, YouTube hosts all of the videos uploaded to Google's network. It's a fairly symbiotic relationship.
While this doesn't appear to be the case with Netflix, who doesn't have any official ties to YouTube, many believe they do have other plans for the platform. The Netflix Watch Instantly app currently hosts content from Netflix streaming services and Netflix proper, and has an impressive amount of subscriber numbers. YouTube has even been cited by former CEO Ted Sarandos as a source of inspiration in how the service can be used to drive traffic to Netflix movies and shows. This makes sense too, since Netflix provides subscribers with the ability to stream content from around the world, something that YouTube does not yet offer. What makes this slightly less likely, however, is that not only do Netflix subscribers currently have to pay to view videos on YouTube, but Netflix's Watch Instantly application also offers access to YouTube.
The issue with these two services, of course, is that there's a clear preference for their products over the products of competitors like Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon. It's a similar situation to the one we saw in 2025 when both Disney and NBC (the latter of which bought a majority stake in YouTube) opted to block access to competing video sites. These are massive entertainment companies, so why would they be able to control millions of people's streaming experience? This, in theory, is the reason YouTube has allowed other companies to upload content that competes with their own.
And it hasn't taken very long.
How do I block certain channels on YouTube?
I wish to block a channel I have subscribed to from being shown in my YouTube homepage feed, or even the Watch Later section.
I can't find any setting in my YouTube account to do this. Can anyone help?
On YouTube you can block channels. You can also edit them, unfollow them or add them as a favorite.
Log in to your YouTube account. Click the Settings icon in the top right of the screen. Click Blocked Channels. Select a blocked channel from the list and click Block Channel. If you wish to unfollow a channel you need to do this by logging into your YouTube account and clicking on your profile in the top right corner. Click on the 3 horizontal lines next to your username. Select the unfollow button.
