Is Selenium certification worth it?
I'm currently an IT Technician at a small, non-profit organization.
The organization also has a web presence that is managed by an external firm. My duties include creating custom websites and basic website maintenance. I am also in the process of becoming more knowledgeable about testing, particularly Selenium. Should I pursue a certification? The organization does not have a budget for training, so they are hoping that this certification will help me get a better paying job.
I'm just not sure if I would really benefit from this certification. Our company's IT department has already hired a tester and I'm one of the only two testers for the entire company. It's very rare that anyone wants to learn a new language, but I don't think anyone has taken the time to learn Selenium yet.
Does anyone have any experience with Selenium, or anything that might sway my decision? Re: Selenium certification worth it? I do not have any direct experience with selenium as I have worked on projects that involved the testing of ajax apps, but I have worked with an offshoot of the selenium (selenese) testing environment that works with java. I have never worked with a language specific to the selenium environment, but based on what little I know, I would say that the selenium environment is very useful as a developer when working on web applications (java). For example, you can work with java (and it is java as the engine runs java code) to build your application and then use the selenium environment to write tests, which are automatically executed upon deploying the application. You could even write automated tests in c# using C#, as well as python using python.
Thank you for your reply. When I said "It's very rare that anyone wants to learn a new language" I meant that most companies won't want to hire someone that just wants to learn a new language because there is no need for them. What I mean is that many companies have their testers that just test things as they come, they aren't the type to learn a new language. As a result, many IT departments aren't willing to invest in training anyone.
Yes, a number of people in the organization do know a bit about testing, but since everyone does the same work, we don't get any type of specialization.
How much do Selenium testers make?
Just wondering what the ratio of Selenium testers to testers in the entire world is and just how much work each one of us does (and are paid). I know we get compensated fairly well compared to what people make for programming, but can I consider myself a part of that compensation?) In other words, how can we know how much we actually get paid for our work since our company won't share that information with us? This isn't how the government works though, and so you have to report how much you actually take home, which means they would have to either find out how many hours you work each week, or just assume you're working 40 each day. How often would you expect them to work to find out, and what if they do every day? It's just an arbitrary number assigned by a third party who has absolutely no way of knowing how much you made because they aren't paying you or keeping track.
There is no universal standard of how much you should make. Just look for more work if you want a higher salary. If you have a great boss, it could be worth it to stay around. If you get burned out working overtime and no longer enjoy what you're doing, you'll look elsewhere, or find a job with better hours, or even do the same thing in another country.
Well, there is not some magical number that everyone is supposed to make. It depends on the country you are from. Here in Finland there are two main types of salaries. One is called basic salary and other one is called social security compensation.
