Can I trace someone on Google Maps?
The world's leading search engine, Google, has announced the ability to trace someone on Google Maps.
For most of us that means the ability to place a dot on the street where someone was standing, or standing right now. To be able to locate the person, however, is not exactly what this feature is meant for.
Google Maps is primarily about finding the place you want to go, rather than who you are looking for. If you search for an address with a specific set of keywords, it will find exactly what you are looking for. You can also find a map of your neighborhood by searching for the name of the streets. There are various ways to narrow down the search so that it gives you what you are looking for, but tracing someone using Google Maps is not one of them.
I'm writing this article to demonstrate how easily you can find and trace a person on Google Maps. This can be a useful tool if you need to locate an offender who has committed a crime, or if you are in the middle of a criminal investigation and need to find someone without getting too much attention.
You do not have to download or install anything - just use the Google Maps website. This is done by simply typing in the street address of the person you are looking for and pressing enter.
A pop-up window will appear, which will show you a map of the area. The person will appear as a little black dot. If you hover your cursor over the dot, it will show you the map zoomed in.
The dot will turn orange and will stop appearing in the map when the person leaves the area. When the person is inside an area with a specific radius, the dot will stay green for a short period of time and then turn red.
The orange dot and the radius are controlled by a Google settings option that is accessed by going to Google Settings > Map Location. To find and track a person on Google Maps, you will need to know their full name, the date of their birth, and their approximate age (although not a very precise one). The most accurate way of finding someone on Google Maps is to search the name of the street where they live, and then type the name in a 'find nearby' box. By doing this, you will get a map of the streets nearby, with the name of the streets displayed.
Can you track someone's location with just their phone number?
According to the book "Snooping with Location: Privacy and Surveillance" by David Greene (Google). The cellular provider does not know where the phone is at the moment, but it can use this information to construct a map of where the phone has been, based on the information it has available. This is how the cellular provider is able to track a person, by knowing where they have been at a certain time, and using that to construct a map of the area. Cellular providers may be able to track your location in realtime or asynchronously (by recording the GPS of the last cell tower you connected to). They may also keep records of calls, text messages and other mobile related communications.
In addition, they can identify the device you're using to call them and then match the time and date of the call to a physical location. (Note that for these records to be retained the carrier needs to give their consent to the agency requesting the data.)
Additionally, the carrier can look up information about your device's unique ID (IMSI) and your cell phone number and then link that information to a physical location.
Can you find someone on Google Maps without them knowing?
The company is now giving us the option to "anonymize" our info so we can more easily share our personal details like where we live and where we work.
In some cases, not even a picture or video of where we are will be shared with people trying to find our profile.
What do you think? Is this privacy creeping? Or is it better to know that your information is out there? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.
How can I secretly track someone's location?
The other day, I read about how one man used an expensive spy camera disguised as a smoke detector in order to spy on his wife.
If there's no money involved, is there any way that I could use an Arduino to secretly spy on someone without them knowing it? And how do I hack something like that? Could you show me an example of using one of those smoke detectors? You would need to be very sneaky and have a close look at what kind of sensor it is so you could make a device that will "listen" on the same frequency. I don't see a way of doing it while using only a computer and arduino, unless you're prepared to spend a fortune on some very well hidden equipment.
You can listen on the same frequency as it is, you don't need to make one out of a smoke detector, you'd need some kind of transmitter that broadcasts the right signal when you want it to go off, but as far as I know such devices are easily available, especially if you can think of making a speaker/sensor that would broadcast on the frequency or a cheap audio/transmitter module.
