Do I need to scrape off old paint exterior?
This is a discussion on Does I need to scrape off old paint exterior?
Within the General Help forums, part of the Support Forum category; Rebuild or repair the exterior of my 1973 VW Bug. I plan to use only original parts.
Should I start with stripping . Should I start with stripping off the old paint before applying new paint? Any suggestions of tools or chemicals? I live in an urban area and it's cold winter months and don't want the paint to crack when it dries. Re: Does I need to scrape off old paint exterior? I had my car painted at a car dealership several years ago. The guy (I think it was a guy) used a couple of cans of white and a brush, and the car looked great. Not knowing better, and knowing nothing about painting of that sort, I'd go with the guys opinion rather than trying to "fix it yourself"
The answer for this varies based on your skill level, how dirty the paint is, and how old you want your car to look like. As we already know, simply washing it and drying it can remove most of the dirt, but will leave you with a duller-looking vehicle. There is definitely more than what might be seen from the surface. With proper preparation, you'll have much better luck with no visible paint flaws!
If you know how to strip down a vehicle and wash it properly, and if you have time, then I say you do all the work in stages. You probably could complete this job in a week and still have time left over for a major life event or two.
The first step would be to clean your car up, including the exterior of your windshield and rear window. Once the surface is clean, I recommend you start with spot-stripping. A good cleaner of the windshield and windows will cut the oil and grease off better than anything short of industrial methods.
If you're not sure how to safely handle automotive materials in cold weather, I suggest you take the car to a professional.
How to scrape off old paint?
Hey I have a 2025 G35 that I bought with some horrible nasty rust spots all over the body.
They are so bad in fact, that one spot covers nearly an entire quarter of the front bumper. My plan is to sand it down, apply a coat of primer (I know it's a long shot) and a topcoat. It looks like I'm going to need a decent power washer to get the rust off. What's the best way to go about scraping it off? I was thinking of sanding it down, putting some Rust-Oleum primer on it, waiting for it to cure and then removing it by hand. I could also put Rust-Oleum primer on it, wait for it to cure, remove it by hand and then sand it down. Which of these approaches is more likely to work? I have no idea if it will peel or just flake away. Is there any reason why I shouldn't just leave it be?
I would recommend using a brush/knife combo. It's not terribly hard but it is rather tedious. I did it at a car show once when I needed a demonstration and it took about an hour. As for the primer it's a toss up. In theory the primer is supposed to seal the rust where it happens and eliminate it's presence. In practice, you want it as thin as possible, almost to a film. I would sand it down first and then apply a little primer and let it dry overnight. That should be enough to cover the area without adding much to the surface. Once it's dry, use the brush to gently remove it. You're going to have to take some time doing this but it will be the most effective method. I would try and avoid using the power washer unless you are prepared to spend a lot of time. It could do more harm than good. Good luck.
What can I use instead of a paint scraper?
What is a good way to scrape paint off of a wooden floor?
Scrapers are used for stripping and cleaning paint. I don't know what you are scraping off, but I would be very careful with wood floor paint, since it may contain solvents and other dangerous chemicals.
First, use a broom to sweep the area clean. This will remove any dirt and debris, which could then be scraped away.
Then, sand the surface with 400 grit sandpaper. Sanding a wooden floor is easier than it looks. A circular motion is best. Use a fine-toothed pad to smooth out the surface after sanding.
If the paint is particularly tough, use a wire brush. Scrape off the tougher stuff first, then apply a few coats of a better quality latex or oil based paint, such as Sherwin Williams "Semi-Gloss" or "Eco-Solv" (a favorite of mine) or a good quality acrylic. Don't forget to use a primer.
Finally, use a new piece of 400 grit sandpaper to smooth out the surface. Use a circular motion and avoid pushing too hard on the paper.
Good luck. We had the same problem when we tried to refinish our floor. It was just a wood board. After some research, I found out that we need to use a scraper to scrape off the old finish. Then we used a putty knife to scrape off the old paint. After that, we used a sandpaper to sand it smooth. After sanding, we used a water base spray to spray it with.
