How to connect to Windows server using VPN?

How to setup VPN server in Windows Server 2022?

Hello, guys.

I've made several servers in my organization, and I am trying to figure out the best setup for VPN. Here are my requirements:

I would like to have VPN server, so I can access the internet through that server. I have to have a web server for my intranet. All the servers must behind a router (like a cisco) so I could access the internet. I also have to access the internet through my work VPN server (because my work does not offer a static ip for my machine). I'm not sure what kind of server to use. I was thinking about using windows Server 2026 Core, but I'm not sure what kind of server would better for me. I've heard about windows server and docker on the same machine.

What would be your recommendation? Can you give me more insight? Thanks in advance! P. I am using Ubuntu 20.04 if that matters

UPDATE. What I am trying to do is to make it possible for my employee to access the internet through my work VPN. However, I do not want him to use my work internet connection (which is not static). I would like to be able to access the internet through my server instead. Also, my work has a static IP and the employee needs to have the same IP as mine (or a link to my public IP). The employee needs to be able to access all intranet resources through his computer (I will not have a private network at work). The employee is not a sysadmin and has no rights on the servers, so this cannot be a VPS. All servers are behind a router.

Re: ? There's no such thing as a static IP address, unless it's your home address. They can all be assigned based on the users' login name, or something along those lines. It would be easier to have a static IP address than having to worry about changing DNS settings every time a person changes their network location.

I'm curious as to why you're using a Cisco router? If you have access to a router from your ISP, you can probably just put it into bridge mode and that'll give you the same functionality.

How to connect to Windows server using VPN?

When you install or connect to the VPN on my system(I am connecting to Windows Server) I cannot able to use the Windows Update. It show "Windows Update is not working on this computer because a network control app (eg: Microsoft Anti-Spyware/K9), network connection manager, or firewall program is preventing updates from being downloaded and installed. If updates are not available, contact the person who installed the app".

The Error message like below. "Windows Update cannot be started or it's already running. Please close any applications that may be using a device port and try again. The current device configuration is not supported."
Please help me. I suggest that you don't allow any firewalls to block updates.

How do I configure routing and remote access on Windows Server 2022?

In Windows Server 2026 R2, you configured routing and remote access options using the console tools.

In Windows Server 2026 and later, you use Server Manager. As a reminder, here's the complete list of new features in Windows Server 2012:

Remote Access - For improved security and privacy on your remote PC, the new Remote Access feature allows administrators to set up new policies to restrict which computers and resources can connect to your network and whether users can see others on their computers. In addition, the new Remote Desktop User Interface (RDU) feature reduces user interactions with desktop computers, allowing users to access applications directly from their secure mobile devices.

VPN Server - You can turn a local or virtual private network (VPN) server into a virtual gateway for client computers that are connected through either a standard network gateway or an Internet connection, such as via a local area network (LAN) or VPN. The virtual gateway also supports multiple user accounts and can be connected to from multiple places, including public hotspots.

IPsec VPN - You can use IP security (IPsec) VPN connections to create a virtual network gateway between two local networks (eg, two LANs or a LAN and a remote wireless network), enabling you to run remote access on this virtual network gateway. IPsec VPN connections can be created by connecting multiple Windows Server computers or servers and configuring a Windows Server firewall for the IPsec VPN tunnel.

Does Windows have a built in VPN server?

If so, which one?

How about a program that will run on the client machines and do the routing itself, so that when your LAN becomes out of network it automatically finds a VPN server and logs in?

I guess I am asking for the program to "watch" for when the connection breaks and connect to the VPN Server to reestablish the connection? The Windows 10 Home has what they call Remote Connection Manager but if I recall correctly, It requires the user to have Admin credentials. That means they would be required to log in with their admin account. I'm not sure what else there is there. But I haven't used that feature yet.

Yes, Windows has an built-in VPN function that I use quite often, I just need an extra tool to assist me in finding the VPN servers. I didn't think you needed Admin rights for that, but that's really good info. The tool you linked to looks like it should do what you want, although the manual seems a bit thin on details. There's some mention of having to enter the username and pass, but not much there. If it still doesn't quite work you could probably find some information on the interwebz for it.Regards,
