Why doesn't TunnelBear work?

Why doesn't TunnelBear work?

I have been using TunnelBear for quite some time now.

It's absolutely amazing, it gives you a free mobile phone that you can use in the UK and Europe. I've tried it at an international airport in London, to be greeted with a blue screen that read 'tunnelbear is working' and now it's in my pocket.

I then downloaded an app on my laptop. Went into the app, and tried to start tunnel bear. The icon appeared and I put the laptop onto standby, and the internet stopped working. A message appeared saying 'This computer isn't connected to the internet'.

I put my laptop back on, and tried to start tunnel bear again. The icon appeared, but I still couldn't start tunnel bear. I then had to close the app and restart my phone. I did this and the internet worked fine.

Now, my laptop is acting up. The internet doesn't work, but the wifi icon in the taskbar doesn't disappear. However, everytime I try to access the internet it says, 'the internet isn't connected to this computer', even though the wifi icon in the taskbar is active.

TunnelBear doesn't work anymore? TunnelBear used to work perfectly, now when I open it up it gives me the blue screen of death and won't load up. It won't even load the mobile site, so now I can't access my VPN account or upload photos. Any ideas?

How do I make the TunnelBear work again? The TunnelBear icon appears as usual in the taskbar, but when I try to start the app I get an error saying the TunnelBear process can't start. I can't start TunnelBear from the command line either. I've tried renaming and moving the TunnelBear folder to a different location, but nothing works. I have also updated to Windows 10 and I'm not sure if that might be causing any problems.

Why is TunnelBear so slow?

TunnelBear has an excellent product, but I'm always frustrated at how slow it is to launch webpages and load the TunnelBear client.

Why doesn't it just work like a regular browser and open the webpage immediately? The answer: the problem is that TunnelBear client runs on its own, in-process, non-threaded server. When you browse to a TunnelBear URL, TunnelBear gets control of your computer, opens a TCP connection back to the TunnelBear server, downloads some HTML for the page, and displays it. The problem is that by the time your browser receives the HTML and can actually display the page, the connection with the TunnelBear server has already been closed. Even if the connection stays alive for a few seconds longer, the server will be long gone.

So what's so good about a browser like Chrome/Chromium or Firefox/Firefox Quantum? They don't take control of your computer when you browse to a TunnelBear URL. Instead, they immediately open a tunnel (HTTP CONNECT request) to the TunnelBear server, asking it to start an in-process web server. That server is running in your web browser, so you get direct access to the website.

Why is this so good? Because any web server takes time to run, typically on the order of milliseconds. There's nothing wrong with starting such a server in-process; most browsers have a web server built in. But it takes that web server 5 to 20 milliseconds to get up and running and accept connections. That's not long enough to download the TunnelBear homepage, but it is long enough for a simple page like a news feed or social network news feed. If you have multiple tabs open with TunnelBear clients in them, you may have to wait several milliseconds before they're all loaded up and working. In many ways, opening a tunnel in your web browser is just a more efficient way to open a tunnel.

To solve the problem, TunnelBear uses a hybrid model. They have a web server that does nothing except open TCP connections to a local web server running in-process on each client's system. There's no reason that this server could not also fetch some pages and pass them to the client's in-process web server for display.

Why is my TunnelBear login request failed?

I've tried to login via the TunnelBear website and I receive the following error message.

TunnelBear login request failed: Please check your network connection and try again. My computer has an active internet connection. I use a wired connection.

Any suggestions? That is not a problem of the website - there are many things you can do wrong when setting up a VPN connection. First, ensure that your computer is connected to the internet via an Ethernet connection. If you are using a wireless connection, that could be causing problems.

Make sure the VPN server you are trying to connect to is online. In some VPN systems, the website will try to connect to a web page on the VPN server before allowing you to make a login attempt. If you are using a non-standard port for the web server, make sure that is being opened. If the VPN server is behind a firewall, you might need to open access to the port (not all firewalls allow incoming traffic to a specific port).

Try accessing the web page from a different browser. Try testing it with Google Chrome or Firefox. If you get the same problem, then it is not a TunnelBear problem but a problem with your computer.

If you have a router, you should be able to connect to the VPN server directly via the LAN IP address of the VPN server.
