Do camellias need full sun?
Asking the experts.
We have two beautiful camellias which are flowering in the front of our garden. Can you recommend a suitable container for them? Our garden has no full sun, but it gets hot during the day. Could we plant the camellias in the sun and make up for it later by putting in a light mulch or planting some annuals in the shade? What do you recommend to do with the camellia leaves and debris? Thanks in advance! I would go with annuals in the shade. Camellias don't like wet feet. We had to dig up one of our camellias and repot it when it developed a root rot because it was sitting in a puddle. I wouldn't want to take any chances with yours.
Camellias do not like wet feet. If you have not done so already, try to get your soil tested for pH levels. This will also give you a good idea of what nutrients you have. If you have a deficiency of iron or boron, then you can use a fertilizer like Epson's Bloom or Plantinat. The leaves need to be picked up every month, as they drop off. Some people put them in compost or a general potting soil, but they drop quickly and look bad, so I try to keep them separate from the other plants. They need to be pruned when they are still young (2-3 years old). This means you have to prune them back when they are small, so they have plenty of foliage to grow on. They will also be happy in full sun, and will flower year after year, and will bloom in all seasons, unless you have very cold winters. Also, if you decide to plant them in a container, you will need to provide drainage, so you may want to use a tray or pots instead of the original pot.
Re: did camellias need full sun? I'd recommend a full sun bed. It'll need to be raised so that the roots can grow down into the soil. Don't forget to water them as they're growing. When they're a few years old, you can repot them into a larger container if you wish. The new container should have drainage holes in the bottom.
What does an overwatered camellia look like?
One of those 'oh, I know a plant that needs watering, but really I'm not sure what to do with it' plants!
I have found that overwatered camellias tend to look a bit droopy and saggy. Overwatered means those beautiful, luscious green leaves are beginning to die.
But you can avoid this problem before it happens! There are simple things you can do to avoid overwatering your plants. If you're new to caring for plants, the first thing to check out is the watering instructions on the tag on the plant. This should tell you how often the plant needs to be watered! If the plant does need water then follow the instructions. But for some plants, the watering instructions are not on the tag!
How do I know which plants need water? Check the plant for a tag! If the watering instructions are not on the tag, look at the instructions on the plant itself! Check the tag - or the plant! But how do I know if I need to add moisture to the soil? It's very important to have the proper level of moisture in your plants soil! Too much water and your plants get a lot of water damage. Do I need to add water to my soil to prevent overwatering? A pot that is too dry is one way a plant can be overwatered. Many plants tend to prefer being at about 1.2 to 1.3 times the weight of the pot when they are in full bloom. Overwatering is when the soil becomes saturated. Overwatered plants look sickly because the air spaces around the roots are all clogged up with water. You can check if the soil is damp by gently tapping it. Do you hear the water dripping out of the bottom of the pot? If there is not an excess of water, then you probably are not overwatering.
Some good news here - once your camellia blooms, the blooms tend to come off on their own! That's right, if you let your camellia flowers drop they will continue to live and grow well! Don't worry if you see small dead flower buds - the plant still has life! They will continue to blossom into beautiful blooms later!
