Is Google a web crawler?

Do web crawlers still exist?

In the last few years, many SEOs and bloggers have claimed that there's no longer any need for web crawlers as it has been replaced by search engines.

While I wouldn't go that far, Google does have a monopoly on search and it's likely that it will be in an even better position after the recent changes to its algorithm. That being said, one of the most frequently asked questions about SEO has always been do SEOs still need to use web crawlers?

I often get asked this by readers and also by SEOs who feel they need to know how to do it for themselves. It's definitely an uncomfortable question, because if you are using the internet at all, I'm going to assume you know how to open your browser and use a search engine. Nevertheless, not everyone has the same knowledge of the tools of the trade, so below we will be going over some basic information on web crawling.

There are three different types of bots which could come in use; desktop and mobile web crawlers, software designed for web crawling and SEO services with their own in house team of developers. Let's take a look at what we will be looking at today.

A desktop crawler is exactly that, a desktop web crawler. They are usually used to run through a website looking for keywords to identify, track and report back to the SEOs. A website can have thousands of pages, so this process would take a very long time. Mobile web crawlers have more complex search algorithm, looking at things like a mobile site's speed and whether or not a website is responsive, which is what you want to be checking out before you decide to rank your site at the top of google.

A software-based crawl is the type most experienced SEOs will probably use most often. The software will have a number of presets to get started with.

Web crawling needs a lot of patience, especially if you are doing it manually. You need to spend a while waiting for results and it takes an expert-level understanding of how your website runs. This means that not only do you have to ensure it doesn't slow down the way the search engine did when it crawled your site, but you have to find ways to prevent them from finding a spider friendly URL to crawl to in the first place.

Is Google a web crawler?

No, but it's the first step in a process that helps you find information online.

Google doesn't actually read all of your content. So it doesn't have the ability to index content that has been written in any language, including ancient languages like ancient Greek and Latin. To be able to index content, it will require you to make your content available on the internet through links. The text that the web crawler finds will be the first set of words used by the search engine to identify relevant information.

This is a pretty complicated process. Google is very busy, but its systems are not foolproof, either. It makes mistakes sometimes. But, as long as you provide your content in an easily readable format, Google will return relevant information for you.

How is my content indexed? Once Google has access to your web content through links, it's going to crawl your content. To get to your content, Google will read all of the words that it finds along the way. If there is a hyperlink to a page that has more words than the rest, Google is going to use those words, or pages with hyperlinks that lead to them, to create the index. That means that if you include keywords in your posts, this article or in other places on your website, those keywords are going to be included in the search results.

This is how your post looks to Google and how it will be treated for the purposes of search. Notice that the post is divided into two parts. The first part is the actual post, and the second is the header, which includes the author's name, the title of the article, and the date of the post.

The headers are the most important part of your post to Google, because they tell Google exactly what your post is about. How will Google know what my post is about? Google's search engine finds and parses content based on the words that it finds on your pages. The titles, headers, and body of your posts are the first words that the search engine reads to decide whether your post is relevant to what the searcher has typed into the search box.

How is this information used? The search results returned by Google are displayed to the searcher in a number of ways.

What does a web crawler do?

A web crawler follows links and indexes links and pages that are found.

The more links you can follow in any given situation, the better you will get at SEO (Search Engine Optimization). This helps to rank higher for some of the more popular search engines such as Google and Bing. If you've ever wondered how to get some free links on your website, here's a tutorial on how to get them!
