Can Netflix see through VPN?
Netflix has just announced that they are going to start cracking down on VPNs.
They're not saying what VPNs they will be blocking, but presumably they will be looking for a few things: VPNs which will route traffic through your computer and not on a different server. VPNs which allow you to connect from multiple locations. VPNs which allow you to connect from a country which doesn't allow Netflix to distribute content to the region. Netflix is a big company with millions of users. It would be easy for them to block VPNs in their TOS. But I don't think they will.
The reason for this is that VPNs are widely used by many different kinds of users. There are government workers who need to access blocked websites, journalists who need to access blocked websites, people who work in countries where access to Netflix is restricted (eg China) and people who just want to access their favourite content.
If you are one of the millions of people using a VPN to access Netflix in a country where Netflix is restricted, you probably don't care about Netflix's TOS and will be able to continue using your VPN. If Netflix decides to block VPNs it will not just affect one small group of users but all of them.
Of course you can argue that the number of people who use VPNs to access Netflix is very small and that Netflix should just add a we are aware of VPNs which allow you to access our content in countries where it is restricted clause to their TOS, but I think this is unlikely to happen. One reason for this is that Netflix is a publicly traded company and I don't think that public companies want to get into legal trouble. But another reason is that Netflix are unlikely to be able to prove that VPN users are doing something illegal.
One way they could try to prove this is by comparing IP addresses used by VPN users to IP addresses of people who use VPNs in countries where Netflix is not restricted. If the numbers don't match, it's possible that VPN users are being routed through different servers. This would make it impossible for Netflix to tell which IP address belongs to which user.
Another possibility would be to see if VPNs are sending traffic through a user's own computer.
Will Netflix block me for using a VPN?
What does Netflix say about using a VPN to access its content?
Is it legal? Netflix says this in the terms of use: Your account will be disabled if we discover you have exceeded your. Grace period, or if we detect any of the following activity on your. Account: You are using more than one Netflix membership number at the same time. For example, you might share your Netflix membership number with someone else who does not watch all the movies and TV episodes available. If you do this, each of you will have an individual Netflix. Access account, and you will be charged for accessing the movies and. TV shows beyond your individual subscription. You are accessing the Netflix website from a country other than the country where you paid for your Netflix membership. You must live in the country where you bought your membership. You are accessing Netflix from a computer, tablet, or phone located in a country different from the country where you bought your Netflix membership. You must live in the country where you bought your Netflix membership. You are accessing the Netflix website from another location. Accessing the website from a location outside of the U.S. Is not allowed. You can only use the website from a location inside the U.
You are logging into your account using your Facebook or email address instead of using the username and password assigned to your account. You are using our IP address to access the service. All traffic to Netflix.com, Netflix mobile apps, and on devices, is routed through our network. This means that we know what you're using our services for. If you violate these terms, your account may be terminated or limited. In access. Violating these Terms is a breach of the agreement and may result in suspension or termination of your account.
So, I'm not sure that they'll automatically disallow, but it is possible. A more prudent approach would be to use your main Netflix account, so your own credentials are safe, and make sure that the VPN connection is configured not to leak out your internet traffic. I don't believe that Netflix can distinguish between traffic sourced from an open source software proxy like Tor or an encrypted connection.
Why isn't my VPN working for Netflix?
If you try to watch content on Netflix in a country other than the one you live in, the site might not see you.
Try entering your email address in the top right corner to verify your location.
For example, if you're trying to access US Netflix from your Australia VPN, your request is coming in from America. Your location will be recorded as America and the site will say you're in the wrong country, even though you're viewing it on an Australian IP address.
In these cases, it helps to know how Netflix works. It's a complicated process, but when the VPN is not in use, Netflix uses a method called geolocation. This is a complex algorithm that scans the IP addresses that users request content from, and attempts to match the information on where the requests came from with a geographical area.
However, this is where VPN comes in. When you connect to a VPN server, this can allow your requests to go through to the actual server, rather than a proxy. Your geolocation is still recorded by Netflix, but it is matched to the IP address of the VPN instead.
There are other solutions, too. If you're running Windows, you may need to run a DNS proxy to ensure your geolocation is recorded properly. This is most easily done using a Chrome extension.
VPNs do work, but only if you use them properly. For best results, you should use a provider that offers you high quality service, good customer support and offers apps for all major platforms.
How long does the whole Netflix-VPN-DNS thing take? It doesn't take long. Just try logging on to a VPN and watch a couple of movies. What we want is for Netflix to think our IP is from America, the home of Netflix, but that hasn't happened yet. When we're using the VPN on an Australian IP, they think we're in America, hence the error message telling us we're wrong.
Once the VPN is switched off and the IP changes back to being linked to Australia, everything will look correct. A good VPN makes it work seamlessly but if you're not connecting to any Netflix servers, it probably won't show you anything. The DNS resolution is happening on local networks.
