What makes a good Social Media Manager?

It is an alluring topic.

When were setting up our Social Media Management Team for our company, it was important to determine what was the best fit for the job. With all of the various factors that one has to think about in terms of a good Social Media Manager, it is easy to lose sight of what really matters. I do not want to suggest that the answer to the question of is it depends, because in reality it can be answered with a firm yes or a firm no.

Why do I bring this topic up now? Well, I have found that there are plenty of Social Media Managers out there that really are not doing their jobs well. The reason I bring it up now is because, in setting up my team, I set out to find the best fit for the job. But when I went out to interview people to see who was good, I discovered that many of the candidates were doing a great job, and had done so well that I did not know what to look for anymore. Now that I have been working with them for some time, I am going to go through each of them in turn and show you what I mean by the fact that they are doing a great job.

The first person that we hired was someone who worked for us before. When I asked him to do his job again, he proved to me that he really had not changed all that much, and in fact, he had improved. Now, I am not talking about his actual Social Media work, but rather how he made the rounds at conferences and just did a great job. He was a great Social Media Ambassador.

The second person that I hired was someone who had worked at another company that I had been at before. He was a former intern at a major company, and this really showed in how he operated. Now, as I am sure that many of you know, a great Social Media Manager has to be able to talk to other Social Media Managers. In my opinion, it helps if you can get an idea about how others operate, and if you can listen to them. This person listened to those that he needed to talk to, and he was always ready to help out.

The third person was someone who was my wife's friend from her college days.
