How do I download everything from a Web page?
On the File menu, click Save Target As.
The Open and Save dialog boxes appear.
Choose the folder and filename in which to save the file from the dialog boxes, or type new names in the dialog boxes, then press the OK button. If you have two or more downloaded files, the Open dialog box (or multiple tabs of the Save dialog box) usually appears multiple times with the same name. To select the file you want to save, double-click on it.
To download a site's entire collection of files, right-click in the window that appears after the site has loaded. Then select Download or Save Link As. When you start the download, the progress meter appears, as shown in Figure 9.
Tips for downloading large files. In an attempt to download an MP3 file from Kazaa, I found that downloading stopped around 40 seconds into the file. I don't know whether this is standard behavior or not, but we tried to download a full movie file that was several hundred MB in size, just to find out. The progress meter stopped for several minutes, and after a couple of hours the download had finished, giving a very small piece of the whole file.
Figure 9. Download progress meter You may notice the window that appears when you try to download a file: To view the progress of the download, hold down the Control key and click in the message bar. A progress meter appears. In the status area at the bottom, you can click icons next to the words Download Rate or Download Time to display additional information about the file.
If you want to cancel a download, right-click and select the Cancel option. If you want to change your download location, right-click and choose Save Link As.
Note: When you download large files, you may wish to use the Save As dialog box rather than the Open dialog box. In the dialog box, select a different folder, and then select a filename for the file.
Is downloading from site illegal?
My daughter is on an Internet-based DVD downloading site and I'm concerned that she may be downloading illegal software or something.
She's an 8th grader, so she doesn't know anything about the world of computers. The site says that there are no viruses, but I don't know if it's safe to allow her to download. If it's not safe, then what do I do?
No, your daughter is not doing anything illegal. If you are concerned, you might ask her what kind of software she is downloading.
As to downloading from sites such as Kazaa, Limewire, Napster, etc. I don't think they are very safe either. I've heard that you can get viruses from those sites. And while your daughter may not know any better, I wouldn't want to take the chance of downloading software that will cause problems for her computer.
There is an entire industry built around these types of "sharing" sites. I think it's safe to say that, in the long run, your daughter will benefit from being able to download these files.
I think you might be over-reacting a bit. Just because a site says there are no viruses, doesn't mean that the site is safe. As to viruses, most of them aren't active until someone actually visits the site. I've never heard of one getting onto a child's computer before they visited the site.
