Can WiFi owners see browsing history?
I was reading a few news articles today about an app called, "Faces of WiFi", and one of them specifically mentioned "The App uses Wi-Fi owners' location data to display a user's location." Does anyone know if it's possible for the "owner" of a particular WiFi network? I have been working with this technology as a consultant and were using the WiFi information to identify what parts of town needed repairs and where there wasn't adequate access, but I think I have more than just an academic curiosity into this. Do certain types of devices have built in sensors to detect where WiFi is available? Or is it possible that even though a hotspot is turned on, is there a way to detect where it's turned on from? I know it's something that would be considered quite sensitive information, but the company that had originally built the software has since been bought by another company (and they were very interested in protecting the privacy of any WiFI connection, or so I thought), so I'm still curious. Do you know any apps that can tell you where your WiFi is available, and would be willing to use my information responsibly, or perhaps someone I know can help me, or provide me with some information? It seems like it does what I thought it would.
Not at this time. There is no way to read data within a WiFi connection, as far as the owner of the access point knows what they are connecting to, what their customers are browsing, when, etc.
However if you are an administrator of a WiFi network, you can change anything you like (SSID, encryption key, user account names, passwords, etc. So you can definitely access those details.
There is a project to create a program (for Windows) that will allow you to see who connects to your WiFi from a remote computer; the program is named WiFiSniffer. The website also contains information about the progress of the project.
To access the information from a remote computer you will need to log onto the server as an Administrator, as the other way, if you just log into the same computer as an administrator that will not allow you access.
