How much of your internet traffic is Tor?

By Michael Shurkin / May 30th, 2023 Off on Can I Use Tor to Protect Myself? Tor uses cryptography to make people who use it anonymous. Since it is free software, we do not know how much of our internet traffic goes through Tor. The Tor Project did not answer the last question, because they said that in their vision of a completely secure web, people would not need anonymity. But we want to show that they must be wrong and need to provide a plan B. People do need some form of anonymity, or at least security against abuse, when they use the web.

We start our discussion with the question: How much of the internet traffic is currently using Tor. Is the total amount of Tor bandwidth used 10%, 50%, 80%, 99%, 5% or more? It depends on how people use Tor, but a reasonable guess would be 80%. A reasonable estimate of how much the web uses Tor is 80% .

Is a good estimate that a fraction of all the users are being abused, such as stalkers, sex traffickers, etc. We could argue that even if a small percentage of the users are abused, or even if all users are abused by a minority of stalkers, etc. There needs to be a method to stop abusers from abusing other people. And the only protection the rest of the users have is to use Tor. What is the probability that you are going to be the victim of an abuse? We will assume that the abuser is the website operator and that the operator knows that his site is abused. This assumption is safe. How many websites are abused? If every 10,000 websites are abused, that means the abuser has to spend 2 per month or more than 200 USD to cover his abuse. If we had 10000, 100000, 1 million websites, we should expect that for each new website that is started, this kind of abuses would occur 1, 100 times, respectively, because the same abuser has to pay his abuse costs for each one of the new websites.

The abuser is abusing thousands, hundreds of thousands or even millions of users everyday. That means he has to spend millions or even billions of dollars of abuse costs everyday, on abuse costs for all users of the whole web. The abuse costs depend on the number of websites.

What does the Tor Project do?

Tor is the only major software product that encrypts your Internet traffic in such a way that anyone who wants to intercept your Internet activity, including the government, will need a warrant. Tor works by mixing your traffic with traffic from other people around the world, and rerouting your traffic through a network of volunteer relays run by individuals like you. It does this by using multiple onion-routing layers which are distributed all over the Internet, not just in one location.

Tor is free and open source software, available on all major platforms and many mobile devices. It is maintained and developed by a group of volunteers, including a core team and a number of trusted partners. Tor has a strong community of users and developers who participate in the project.

Does Tor get blocked or blocked around the world? In order to protect our users' privacy, Tor anonymizes the origin and destination of network traffic. This means that even though you're visiting a website through Tor, that website won't know where you live or what pages you visited.

People don't want the government or ISPs to be able to figure out who they are. By using Tor, they can safely and anonymously access web sites and services without revealing their identity or location.

Why isn't Tor distributed over the network like other protocols (eg HTTP)? Tor aims to become ubiquitous in the online world, not just for the technically adept but for the average person. We hope that Tor can become an everyday part of the Internet so that everyone can benefit from a more private online experience.

The Tor network relies on the concept of an onion router. Every router in the network is actually a front-end that passes the user's traffic along to the next router. This traffic then gets decrypted, decoded, and re-encrypted before being sent to its final destination.

This is similar to how the WWW operates in that every request goes through a Web server, and each Web server connects to another server. However, because there is a different server in the path for every request, the information about which site you are visiting is not logged by a central server or ISP.

The main reason why we use an onion router architecture is to provide end-to-end encryption.

Are Tor browsers legal?

Can I use Tor in my country? Tor users are not supposed to be tracked by the police or the government. However, they are not allowed to hide their IP address and some police forces are actively tracking Tor users. It is very unlikely that you will get caught because Tor users always use different identities, servers and proxies. The only way for authorities to really track you is when you start using a regular, non-anonymous browsing service like Google, Facebook or any other social network.

In this case, all your browsing information is logged at the central servers and could be available for the police to check out at any time. It is possible to hide your identity at a regular website. While this is a great solution, Tor is much better. The anonymity of Tor browser, in fact, works so well that it has its own browser (also named Tor). However, it is only possible to access the browser over the Tor network.

So, as Tor is an overlay network, when you visit a regular website using Tor, your web browser actually becomes a part of the Tor network. This makes it possible for other nodes to find out your identity. The best thing about Tor browser is that all the connections are encrypted and this makes it impossible for the police or any third party to find out who you really are.

Is it possible to be found out? While using Tor is legal, you might be tracked and even arrested if you visit certain websites or upload any files that contain illegal content. However, it is important to understand that the main target for the police is the darknet marketplaces, namely Silk Road. In fact, we have never seen a single case where the police managed to track someone into the tor network. As soon as they get there, they have to use the Tor browser and cannot connect to the rest of the network. At this point, it is very likely that you are anonymous and that there are no records of your browsing history.

The situation is totally different with a regular website. Even if you enter any information about yourself into the registration form, your data will be passed through an SSL certificate. This means that you will be able to verify that the server is indeed yours. If you do not verify that the site you are visiting is yours, it will always pass through the certificate.
