Can Netflix detect VPN?
I have been reading about VPN's and their effects on streaming.
Some sources say that Netflix is able to detect VPN's and some sources say that they can't.
Some VPN's are not available in Netflix and I also had the same problems when I was using them. So, for those who don't know much about VPN's, I will explain what they are and why you should never use them.
VPN's are not for everyone, so it's important that you understand what they are before you use them. A VPN is a Virtual Private Network, where your Internet connection is transmitted through a tunnel and not your local ISP (Internet Service Provider). A VPN has 3 main uses. It will allow you to use more than 1 country/region. It allows you to use your ISP as your home country. It will protect you from surveillance and censorship.
The problem with VPN's is that they can make your Internet slower and use a lot of bandwidth. This is because when your computer connects to the VPN, it will be forwarded to another country. Your ISP may charge a lot more for that.
You need to also understand that a VPN does not protect you from anything. So, for example, if you are in your country and you visit a website that is against your country's law, you may not be able to do anything about it. You may get into trouble for visiting that website and getting charged with a crime.
If you do visit any websites or you download anything, you will be tracked and it may leave a record of you being there. If you use a VPN, you may be charged for using it. You will not know which country your Internet traffic is routed to until you have already logged in to the VPN service.
A VPN is not the only thing you can use to bypass censorship or surveillance. You can use a proxy, Tor, a mobile data hotspot, or many other things. But if you are concerned about the Internet being tracked or censored, I would suggest a VPN.
The most popular reason why you wouldn't be able to use a VPN in Netflix is because you will not be able to use Netflix at all.
How do I fix Netflix with VPN?
I recently switched to VPN because Netflix is blocked in the US.
When I attempt to stream movies on Netflix, it says: "Stream is not supported in your region". It works on other platforms but not on the VPN.
As far as I know my router supports DNS servers which I haven't set up as a custom DNS server (I use Google's). Do I need to modify my router to forward my DNS server? I have another question about how this works. What DNS servers does my computer see when I go on a website like For instance, if a web page uses HTTPS then it uses the DNS server that resolves the DNS request (usually www.google.com). So is this what the DNS resolver or router sees when a browser connects to Netflix or to other video streaming websites? Also, if there are any sites that make sense for using HTTPS versus standard DNS?
Yes DNS can be used either for encryption or for reverse DNS lookup. As a user you don't use DNS to resolve any DNS requests from your device. Your routers typically forward the DNS queries that you send to it. However I believe some DNS resolvers also can perform reverse lookup (dns-reverse, etc.
DNS can help with encryption (DNSSEC and/or HSTS and Strict Transport Security), but if an application trusts just the TLS connection and nothing else, it may cause a problem. There are plenty of websites which use TLS only and have issues. Some web sites which use HTTPS only will even show incorrect content due to certificates issued to different domain names.
The VPN blocks the Netflix traffic. So if you're using the Netflix service without the VPN it doesn't get intercepted by the VPN; only incoming Netflix traffic over the IP network is affected. If a user is using a VPN that isn't blocking Netflix at the Netflix origin site, then either they were previously using the system using IP network while connected to the VPN, or the source site now is using some VPN-optimized infrastructure. The user will still be experiencing problems.
Is it possible that my current router (Netgear) can't forward packets to/from my DNS server?
Does Netflix not allow VPN anymore?
I am currently running a VPN, and I recently tried to set it up again.
I was able to log in as the same user on the same device with my VPN. However, now, when I try to log in with the same credentials (I have changed nothing), it says, "There is a problem with your network connection. Please try again later."
I'm not sure if it's a Netflix issue or something else. I'm using the app on both my iPhone and my laptop. Both are on the same home network, which is not connected to the internet, but is connected to the VPN.
I just had this happen to me, after running a VPN and then restarting my computer. It is very annoying.
I think it is a problem on their end, because I tried the same thing on my phone and it worked fine. Yeah, but I can't get Netflix to work for me on my phone either. It says that it can't connect, but I'm pretty sure I am. I am using a VPN on my laptop as well, and I am also on the same home network.
My guess is that it is a server error. You might have to contact Netflix support to get it resolved.
I'd contact Netflix support as well. They're the only ones who can really answer what's going on.
Netflix has been saying this for months and they've been working on it. I use a VPN all the time and it's never given me any problems. I don't understand why you wouldn't be able to connect with a VPN.
You can try connecting directly to the IP address (ie not through a VPN) and see if that works. The VPN might be interfering with it.
Why doesn t VPN work on Netflix on phone?
I have Netflix in both my PC and my Laptop at home (Macbook Pro 2017). Both of the PCs are located on a router with 3 connections; 1 for internet, 1 for cable and 1 for phone. My phone has internet connection only and no cable or phone connected, and no DNS server running, so it makes no sense why I can download torrents from a VPN but Netflix can not. For the PC that's been connected to the internet through the cable, the VPN client "OpenVPN" is setup and working, but it's a pain to setup again (for both the Windows/macOS version) every time I plug into the cable. With this in mind, I'm wondering why on the phone the VPN doesn't work? It works on the phone even with the cable connected. Note, this is not a duplicate question (as stated in the comments): Your question wasn't answered here, just different issue, what we could help is how to get OpenVPN setup, that was your primary problem. This is a follow-up: This seems to be the same issue, see answer below. If you are having problems connecting you need to look into if your ISP will block incoming requests for DNS (or ask for information directly).
I have an Asus K53CB and tried all the possible configurations described here (my ISP won t answer when I ask for an address, and I tried asking them for DNS server address through phone to their server), none worked. Your ISP blocks incoming requests from other servers than the one they want you to use. A VPN just forwards all those incoming requests as if they came from that server, hence it doesn't matter if they are blocked or not. Your VPN client does not have a configuration option to change the settings for DNS servers in order to bypass that particular block.
