How to turn off wireshark?
First, it may be important to explain that I am going from Windows 8.
1 machine to Ubuntu 16.10 64 bit - but not a clean install - there is some stuff on there that needs to be backed up and restored into the new system. As such I've just downloaded Wireshark (from the terminal for now - because I'll be backing up stuff) - I haven't installed it yet.
Any ideas as to how I would turn off "Wireshark" (to preserve resources) once it's installed? To view wireshark processes in Windows, use the tasklist command: C:> tasklist. The following tasks are running: svchost (Microsoft-Windows-Sysmon) 0x000003adb7a26800 C:ProgramDatasystemmgrsystemlogLogsSecuritySysmon2017-09-01.xml svchost.exe 0x0000048ed2cfb000 C:ProgramDatasystemmgrsystemlogLogsSecuritySysmon2017-09-01.log
Svchost.exe 0x0000000001a8d1c8 C:winrSystem32spoolsv.exe
C:winrsystem32spoolsv.exe 0x0000d4a9a2a5adf0 C:winrSystem32lsass.exe
How do you disable promiscuous mode?
I'm using a laptop and don't know why it is in promiscuous mode but I don't want to keep it in this mode
Try sudo ifconfig eth1 down.
Or better, since you're using a laptop, plug the lan cable out and then do sudo ifconfig eth0 down. Then the switch should be back to normal mode. If that does not work try
When you have to use the wireless lan with sudo or when you boot your computer and don't want to wait for an automatic reconnection, you can also use the iwconfig command. Then you'll need to specify the interface name, in this case eth0. It'll work the same as the above.
You may also need to restart networking after that. Sudo /etc/init.
