How much does LinkNYC cost?
That's the price for all unlimited data, text, and voice calls.
It includes a SIM card from T-Mobile and a pay-as-you-go phone from TracFone.
What will happen to my phone number? When you activate the LinkNYC service, your phone number will be transferred to the LinkNYC account, but it won't disappear completely. You will be able to take the same number to another service provider.
When will I get the phone? For the LinkNYC service with the free phone, your phone will be delivered two weeks after you enroll. How do I sign up? Visit LinkNYC's website to sign up. You'll find instructions at each step.
I signed up but there's nothing to do yet! You must activate your LinkNYC service before you use it. If you purchased a prepaid phone from TracFone, you must activate it within 72 hours of receiving it. Otherwise, you're not eligible to make calls or get texts and data until the phone is activated.
If you don't sign up within two weeks of you registering, your LinkNYC service may expire. The service will expire if you don't use it for six months or you make more than 1,200 outgoing calls or send more than 2,000 SMS messages. If this happens, you will have to pay LinkNYC service fees and purchase a new phone, and your LinkNYC account will be closed.
Can I call 411 now? No. The LinkNYC service doesn't work for local calls yet. You must purchase a pay-as-you-go TracFone phone to make local calls. You can make local calls from your mobile phone only if you use your phone number on LinkNYC service.
Will I get voicemail, too? Your LinkNYC voicemail account doesn't replace your current voicemail.
Is LinkNYC free Wi-Fi safe?
LinkNYC will use a security protocol called WiFi Protected Access 2, or WPA2, which is the most widely-used wireless security protocol in use today.
With LinkNYC, Wi-Fi protected access means that people can't see your login information on their network, but they can still see and intercept your data. This is similar to how the Internet works, and has been used since the beginning of the Internet. In fact, it's so common, many older smartphones and computers use it, too.
WPA2 is considered enterprise level security because it requires strong encryption of your data, making it harder for hackers to intercept your data. This is important for LinkNYC because LinkNYC customers' data is being sent between the LinkNYC kiosks and other servers.
Another big concern with LinkNYC is that it's a Wi-Fi network. Wi-Fi networks are not as secure as wired networks, and there are many reasons for this. For example, it's very easy to set up a wireless network at home, and this makes it easy for someone to snoop on your data. This is what makes the kiosks part of the problem it's very easy for someone to view your login information. It's also possible that this is a security flaw within LinkNYC's system, although that hasn't been confirmed.
The only way to be sure that LinkNYC isn't spying on you is to ask them to turn off the Wi-Fi function for their network. However, this is more a privacy concern, since anyone who is physically near you could listen in to your data.
It's extremely difficult to use LinkNYC without being located within its 1,000 foot radius. When you're in a particular zone of LinkNYC, your location is automatically detected and your card will be scanned, so LinkNYC will have a record of every time you enter a zone. This record will be saved in a database.
Using LinkNYC is convenient, but it will be more convenient if you use it while you're within its boundaries.
Where is LinkNYC 5G?
5G is going to be a game changer in how we use the internet, both mobile and wired.
While 5G speeds and coverage are going to be important factors, we also want to highlight the other 5G advancements we've already started seeing on the 5G test bed in NYC.
There have been a lot of buzzwords surrounding 5G. The main concern we always hear from people at all levels of experience is how will consumers perceive 5G, and more importantly how much money will 5G companies and carriers like Verizon take from their pockets and wallets, will it be more or less than 4G? Let's address all those questions by taking a look at what we're currently seeing on the 5G test bed in NYC and what we're planning for our cities soon to receive full-fledged 5G networks.
What is 5G? 5G is a new generation of wireless internet, so new there is no industry standard term yet. The most popular definition is that it is 5G because it delivers the highest data rate capability of all wireless networks (1gbps/100Mbs) over very wide area, compared to 3g/4g/LTE which maxes out at 10Mbps/50Mbps/700Mbps in a very narrow band. Most experts agree that it is going to change the world of internet access and adoption in ways we can't imagine today, but most 5G articles leave a great deal to be desired when it comes to educating the public and providing information about where we're going with 5G networks here in the US. So let's dive into that and see if we can't answer some of your questions.
How Does 5G Work? How exactly does 5G work? All wireless technologies communicate through electromagnetic waves. A cell phone communicates to you at close range with the tower using radio waves. For radio waves to reach you, they need a certain distance between the tower and the device. And that distance is dependent upon the signal strength. In LTE this distance is usually 100ft to 1Kft and with other systems this can be more or less depending on the technology involved. In order for your device to have the ability to communicate with the tower, the tower needs to send and receive a signal with the antenna that powers it.
