Which DNS can block ads?

You can do this yourself, but using DNS servers that block ads and/or trackers (using the DNS records from Cloudflare's 1.1 or Google's 8.8) is an alternative to installing ad blockers.

I use a VPN service to watch Netflix outside of my home country. You can block ads in the Netflix app, but not on mobile sites (at least for me). The reason it's harder to block ads on mobile is because they're coming from the mobile carrier.

If you use any VPN service, you can block ads using their DNS server. It's a good idea to check if they use Google's 8.8 or Cloudflare's 1. If they don't use one of these, you can still use the DNS record from Cloudflare (Cloudflare is owned by Google).

Here's a screenshot from the Netflix app showing a message about blocking ads: Using Cloudflare's DNS. Cloudflare's DNS makes it easy to block ads on all your devices, so there's no need to have a VPN service to do this. You can also use Google's DNS to block ads, which is what I use.

But I'm still not sure how to block ads on mobile, even when using a VPN. That's why I tried using a DNS server that blocks ads and trackers. Here's how you can do it yourself (using Cloudflare):

Go to (or if you prefer Google's DNS). On the bottom left, click on Advanced DNS Settings . Scroll down and find DNS over HTTPS . Click on it to enable it.

In your web browser, go to the DNS settings on your phone or computer and find the DNS settings. The settings will look something like this: I've found it easier to just look for the DNS addresses to use for the various devices. (There are lots of different settings, but you can easily switch between them.
