Can Amazon reverse a refund?
Why not just refund the money?
Refunds are pretty hard to get on Amazon and most other sites for that matter. Why not simply reverse a payment and go with the original payment? I know that doesn't make sense because now you have to keep the item in your possession, and they are out their money, but if they want to try and put a negative light on you, do it through an audit to have them pay for storage (and let's face it that wouldn't be a good business choice anyway).
The whole point of refunding was to show transparency on the seller's side of things for sure, but they also wanted to give the buyers (or some of them) the right to get a refund. But then the buyers got burned because a lot of those were no-name companies based overseas.
So amazon is now doing what every other website has been doing; trying to push the buyers to buy from them. They have been saying this for years now, so this makes sense. But I just see these companies using their power to take money back, like their name in the business (Amazon) was taken from this. If I were a victim of being a no-name company, I'd rather have my name as part of the brand than have a no-name company try to capitalize on my name. So they have to pay. Now you have this problem on both sides which means it is a losing situation.
That sounds a lot like they are still doing the way I described them in an earlier version of this thread where they were pushing the buyer (you) to do it and even charging you in the past as well. It makes perfect sense, they lost money because you had to pay the dispute fee and now it won't cost them any money. You will also be refunded your money after the dispute period as long as you paid for storage prior to dispute period.
What happens if you don't return an Amazon item after a refund?
I think you're charged an extra fee.

Can I get a refund on Amazon without returning the item?
My Amazon account was hacked, and someone is claiming to be me.
I sent a return request to Amazon (for the item I bought) and told them I didn't have an account there and I don't know who is making this claim. Is there any way that I can get my money back without having to send the item back?
If you're not comfortable doing that, you can file a claim with Amazon and see what they have to say about it. But at least you'll be able to keep that stuff if you want to keep it.
But even if you do file a claim, how will you prove you're the rightful owner? You are in the USYou bought something. There is no way for anyone to steal from you as long as you can prove your identity. The police can investigate whether there was some illegal activity, but if there is none, the item will be returned to you.
I think you will need to open a police report before you can get your money back. Also, if there is a credit card on file, it might be possible to get a refund without sending the item back.
