How do I stop the WiFi owner from seeing my history?
I use a Mac and I'm a bit paranoid about my privacy.
It's nice to have a place that's completely private where I can have WiFi access and no one can see what I'm doing. But I'm paranoid.
When I use the airport express at my college, it's great because there's no one there but me, so I can just relax and enjoy some time away from it all. But if I want to go somewhere else, like to a friend's house or something, I need to worry about someone else logging into my network. And I don't want to give out my password! How do I keep my passwords secret, and what other things do I need to know? It's okay if you don't know how to stop the owner from seeing your history. That's pretty normal. There are several ways to set up your wireless network, and you need to be aware of what each way is and how it works.
If you're using a router with a built-in Wi-Fi chip, you can use it for the Internet connection and then set up your computer with a different Internet connection. That way, you can connect to the Internet from your computer without having anyone else see what you're doing.
If you're using a wireless card, you'll need to know how to configure it, and you'll need to set it up on your computer. A lot of people use a wireless card and connect to their computer through the airport express. That means they're not giving out their password, but they're still giving out their Internet connection information.

Can an employer see browsing history on home WiFi?
How ?
Hi, I am a contractor and recently had to provide my work WiFi password to my employer. This is the first time I have given it to anyone and I have been using it for a few years without any issues.
I just received an email from my employer stating that they had found evidence of web browsing history on my home computer. I am not aware of any way this could have happened, but I am not sure how to explain this away. I use a VPN at home and have never had this issue before.
Any suggestions would be appreciated, thank you! I'm assuming your employer doesn't have any kind of corporate IT support or network monitoring. In which case, they are relying on a third-party service like Norton 360, Eset, etc.
If you don't want to trust any of these tools, you should disable your home WiFi entirely, and connect your computer to the company's network using a wired Ethernet cable, using the router's IP address. If you do trust one of the third-party services, then I'd suggest disabling them. You can find instructions for each of them here.
Can your WiFi see your internet history?
It can - if the hacker got hold of your router.
That's a frightening thought for all of us and is one that is likely to impact on our lives. It might even raise more important security issues like how safe are our data being.
You've probably heard a story about an old lady who was worried because her WiFi connected to the Internet and she didn't know why. She called the number on the router and when they answered the call, she heard her computer saying "Hi" and she didn't know what to do.
In a nutshell, your WiFi can access every website you visit (and other things), without asking for your permission. Now that's scary.
How? I've been in this industry for the last 11 years and still don't understand how this is happening. The answer - I think - is there are routers out there that allow hackers to control it. That means that hackers can access the information coming in from outside of your router - and use that information to hack your home network.
It's pretty scary - and unless we can solve this we're not in any real control over our data. The solution - which is available today - is to buy a router that is certified as being secure from hacking. These days the best solutions cost only 30 to 50. There are solutions with no extra cost which will help you to secure your network - but the cost for you is that your router has to be turned off, because of its extra firmware required for the extra security functions.
This was the reason why back in 2025 I tried to persuade people to use one of the new wireless routers from Cisco. I found them pretty good, even if they weren't so popular back then. The problem with them was that they still had the standard firmware in place. I tried to persuade people to switch off their routers - or at least remove the firmware and replace it with a different firmware - to protect their home networks. At that time people said 'no' - even though they had told me it was the only solution to the problem. They simply wanted a stable connection - so they kept using their expensive router as usual.
Today's solutions. For people who live in the UK, I'm really happy to be able to recommend three very reputable wireless routers that have been tested for security. The manufacturers, Linksys and Netgear, and their products are all certified to be secure.
Can parents see browsing history on a WiFi bill?
I have a Mac Pro and use the built-in WiFi card, so I do not use an external card.
I just use the one in the Mac.
I went to my account settings today and was able to see some history about what websites I visited, and for how long it was at certain times of day (eg 1am to 7am). It looks like the time stamp is not current (I am at home during those times), and I'm assuming it's because it's not real time (as I'm on the internet with the computer) and when I'm home my computer is in sleep mode. If this is the case, and I know I haven't used the Internet in a while, can my husband (for example) see all of the history on the bill? Or if I only browse the web for work when I get home at the end of the day, is there anyway my husband could know that?
If you're on a mac, there's a privacy page in the system settings under preferences. Just follow the links from there.
You'll also want to look into the history setting on your browser. If it has that option, keep in mind that once you hit print or print preview, it saves your history, and that will be displayed on your print bill.
Yes, browsing history is stored on the machine and not on the account. You could look at your WiFi usage on the router itself, to verify the history as they would be in the same place. Just be aware that your data usage is limited by the amount of data you have in your plan.
This would be on the router and that info is not stored anywhere on my machine or anywhere on the internet. The information I see is for the month before I saw the bill, and it doesn't really look very helpful. It looks like I went to a lot of sites where I could purchase things off of Craigslist.
I checked under Preferences > Privacy in Firefox, but I don't have any settings here that show history. But you're right, you don't have to click on it in order to access it. It's just another link in the top bar.
In Safari I only see my History/Bookmarks (which I only see if I scroll to the top of the page and then click on History/Bookmarks).
