How do I setup a VPN Plus Synology?
What is VPN Plus and how do I setup it on my Synology NAS?
VPN Plus is a VPN service that will work on your Synology NAS and allow you to access the internet securely from anywhere. It works by using an encrypted tunnel between your computer and the VPN provider, and then the provider decrypts it on their end and passes it to you. It also includes some great features for easy setup.
Connect to the VPN Plus server. The first thing you need to do is connect to the VPN Plus server. You can do this on any device connected to the internet (the Synology NAS is always connected to the internet when you power it on).
On a PC or Mac, you should just be able to connect to the server via a web browser, but if you need to access the Synology's web UI then you will need to use the IP address of the server instead. Example: You can get the IP address of the VPN Plus server in your web browser by going to this page. Note that the IP address will change when you restart your NAS, so it's best to enter the IP address into your web browser, rather than your NAS's IP address. To connect to the VPN Plus server on a Synology NAS, go to your NAS's web UI and go to Settings > Internet > OpenVPN (or OpenVPN > LAN) and select OpenVPN Plus as your VPN server. After you have selected the server and connected to it, you should now see the VPN Plus symbol at the top left of the page. Choose your settings. Next, you need to set up your VPN Plus settings. If you want to share the VPN Plus password with your friends, you can do this from the Settings page. You can also choose to auto-connect to the VPN Plus server if you are away from home and don't know whether it is safe or not. If you want to turn off auto-connect to the VPN Plus server, click the Disable button. Set your timezone. The final step is to set your timezone. If you need to access your NAS remotely and your timezone is different to your local timezone, you will need to set your timezone.
Does Synology have a VPN client?
I found it hard to find a client that was easy to use without having to do some legwork.
I've used the free "FreeOpenVPN" client and it's awesome. All you do is input your server info, and they open a client program on your system and then you're good to go. Works even with the latest firmware.
A VPN doesn't need to use OpenVPN or anything, like it was said, most any VPN that supports PPTP or L2TP will work fine. I use the PS3's built in firewall for my router, its pretty good. I've had it set up just like an ordinary firewall.
There are 3 ports, all of them, 1 is for the modem, the other 2 are for game consoles. One of the 2 is configured for a static IP, and the other one has the DHCP range.
The DHCP port, I'm not sure, but maybe it's set to a specific range of numbers, I don't know. The static IP though is configured with a specific static IP address (the number 192.168.x), and a specific subnet (255.0). I think for a game console you don't have to have a subnet? You can put the whole 255.0 directly in the IP field, I think that's what I did and I haven't had a problem.
If you have a router with the "advanced" settings, I think you can disable the DHCP from it too. It lets you save on bandwidth if you don't have the IPs for the PS3 constantly being recycled.
It seems you are able to get outbound traffic by running the free vpn client that comes with the p4 duo. So it is possible to run a vpn on the router. I would need to do some research.
Is it possible to connect a laptop directly to the synology device over usb to get around having to use ethernet? You have to make sure that the laptop is using a standard USB-serial connection rather than a virtual serial port.
