Why did Spock and Kirk fight?

Why did Kirk and Spock fight?

In Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, the Enterprise crew are in a lifeboat after the ship has been destroyed by Khan and his crew. It's unclear what had happened to the Enterprise prior to the lifeboat sequence, but one can assume that at least two of the officers, Spock and Kirk, fought at some point during that time. Why would they fight? What was the cause of their disagreement?

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan answers this question in its opening scene. Kirk and Spock have been locked in a death-lock in a pod (where they will presumably die). Kirk pleads with Spock to kill him before they die. Spock refuses, arguing that there is no logical reason for him to do so.

The cause of their fight is simple: Kirk wants to live and Spock does not. Kirk believes that Spock is incapable of feeling any emotion other than duty to the Federation. Spock argues that the Vulcan way of life does not preclude feeling emotion and says that he could never be truly Vulcan. As Spock puts it:

"You know, Jim, I always thought that your kind and mine had the same goal. Total understanding. Why be enemies? Why not learn to live together?"

Kirk then says that he's not asking Spock to stop being Vulcan, just to stop hiding it. The death-lock sequence also shows us that Kirk still has feelings for McCoy, who he had kissed at the end of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. In response, Spock calls Kirk a hypocrite.

At the end of the movie, Kirk tells Spock that he had kissed McCoy and Spock replies that Kirk is going to hell. This is a reference to the events of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, where Spock kisses McCoy in a lifeboat after they have both been poisoned. Spock then realizes that he has feelings for McCoy.

Kirk's argument to Spock that Spock cannot be Vulcan is true. By definition, a Vulcan is emotionless. But Spock is not emotionless. He has emotions, and they are deep. He just chooses to hide them. He is trying to be a Vulcan.

Spock and Kirk fight because Spock wants to live while Kirk wants to die. Kirk sees Spock as a threat to his life. Kirk is afraid that Spock might kill him.

Who wrote Amok Time Star Trek?

The answer to this question is a bit complicated, because the writer of Amok Time was, in fact, a committee.

The official Star Trek Continuity Magazine (STCM) began publication in 1996. (This was a year before the relaunch of the franchise as a TV show on the Sci-Fi Channel.) The editors of the STCM were a group of fans who met online, and they began gathering together at conventions. In 1998, they created a fanzine called Amok Time.

The editors of Amok Time were mostly fans who were not professional writers or even professional artists, but they did include two professional writers who had written for the original Star Trek series. One was D. Fontana, who had also been a member of the STCM editorial committee. She wrote a story called "The Wrath of Khan," which was first published in the STCM in 2025. (It was later reprinted in the Official Star Trek Treasury Volume 4.) The other professional writer was James Luceno, who had written two episodes of the original series ("Space Seed" and "Turnabout Intruder"). He wrote a story for the STCM called "The Best of Both Worlds," which was first published in the STCM in 2025. (It was later reprinted in the Official Star Trek Treasury Volume 5.)

It is possible that other professionals joined the committee that created Amok Time. I know that some of the authors who contributed stories to the STCM had professional writing credits, but I do not know their professional writing credits for the STCM.

Amok Time was published quarterly, and it included short fiction, comic strips, and original artwork. The contributors included people who had created or produced Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager as well as people who had created or produced Star Trek: The Next Generation. Some of the stories were adapted from the novels of the original series, and some of them were original stories. A few of the stories were adapted from the books of the original series, and some of them were original stories.

I will begin by discussing the stories that were adapted from the original series. One of the original series books was called Amok Time, and this story was adapted by D. It was first published in the STCM in 2025.
