How do I share a VPN with someone?
First, let me start off by saying I'm a little new to all this.
I've been researching VPN's for a while and I finally decided to just go ahead and get myself a few for testing. I currently use ProtonVPN with no issues but I wanted to try out my setup on a friend. This isn't a support question and I'm not looking for any of that. It's more of a question on how I should configure the VPN server to be accessible to a friend (and all the other people who may use it).
I've been thinking about a possible solution but I don't know if it's feasible or even if it would work. My friend is not technically savvy (she's a writer) but she's willing to learn and she's always on her phone. Right now I run my own VPN server on my phone, which I turn on and then I leave it on while I do whatever I need to do. I have been able to connect to my phone using my friends phone (my own phone is still connected to the router, just hers is off).
This is where my question comes in. I want to be able to share the VPN connection so she can use it to connect to whatever service she wants. My phone connects to the VPN server through the router and I have no problems. My question is how do I share the VPN connection with her? Do I have to set up something for her to connect to?
I assume you are referring to the Android VPN app - as that is what you use on your phone. If that is what you use, then you should be able to forward ports through the router.
If you have an open port on the router, then you need to forward that port to the VPN server (as that is what the phone is trying to connect to when it establishes the VPN connection). But the above does not sound like you are talking about forwarding ports, since you mention "sharing" the connection. So. Your question is how do you share your phone's connection with your friend? And what is the problem? That you want to access the VPN server through your friend's phone? And how do you intend to do that? 1) How do you expect to access the VPN server through the phone? You can't as the phone is not configured to use that network.
Can you add a VPN to a hotspot?
I need to add a VPN to a hotspot to my iPhone 5 but I don't want to connect to a VPN.
The VPN is just used for authentication and I only want the iPhone to be visible on a small wifi range. If I use some kind of web proxy, can it still be connected to the hotspot? Assuming the hotspot is running openwrt, you can set up the hotspot to allow incoming connections on port 8080, in addition to the openwrt VPN server (usually it's port 1194). Then you can use a web proxy like wget -S -o /dev/null from the iPhone and connect. That should work, because the proxy will connect, establish the tunnel, and close.
Yes, VPNs can be attached to wireless access points. They're a more secure solution than a proxy, as they're specifically designed to encrypt all traffic.
As long as the connection between the iPhone and the hotspot is secure, there shouldn't be any issue with getting a VPN and making a connection through that VPN.
How do I route traffic through VPN on Mac?
I have a network of VPN servers at various locations around the world, and I need to connect my Macbook Pro from Australia to an Ubuntu server in Europe.
The Macbook doesn't have a public IP address, so how do I route traffic through VPN on the Mac? How do I tell it where to send the traffic? I've tried connecting to a server in the same location as the VPN server, but no connection is possible. I've also tried a server in Europe, but it seems the only way to get that working is to have a physical internet connection. If I use my phone, it can connect and see the VPN servers in Europe, but my Mac doesn't see the server when I connect to the VPN.
I'm guessing this might because I'm using PPTP VPN rather than L2TP, but I don't know if there's a different setting I need to use to make this work. You're going to have a static IP in order to do this, and by default Mac OS X will not assign a static IP address to the device. If you have access to a static IP address, then you can just point your computer to the IP address, and then connect to the server.
If you're wanting to route your traffic through a VPN server, then you're looking for PPTP or OpenVPN. Yes, I can use my phone as a VPN server and it works fine. My question was how do I set the Macbook up so it automatically connects to the VPN server? So that it knows where to route traffic through.
