This is a discussion on ?

Within the Emoji, Texts and Idiots forums, part of the Culture category; I'm sure a lot of you have asked yourself "what is the Dutch flag emoji?" or "what is the Dutch flag emoj. My question is the same. It's like asking what is the American flag. I know the flag of the Netherlands is red white and blue with a yellow V in the middle. I know it's two colors, but the meaning? I know the yellow V is the Netherlands' coat of arms, but I don't know what it means. Does it mean Holland, or The Netherlands, or something else?
I don't think there's a clear answer to that question, at least not in English. The Netherlands flag is a Dutch flag (ie one with a blue field), but as most other flags (eg US, Russia) the flag of the Netherlands is actually composed of two colours, red and blue. Both the "Holland" and the "Netherlands" have their own national symbols, eg a lion and a lioness respectively, so the yellow V in the middle may just be a representation of the flag itself.

The yellow V in the middle is called a vlaggetje (flaglet). It is the symbol of the Nation, and has no official connection to the provinces or cities. To understand the meaning of the flaglet, one has to read the first paragraph on Wikipedia. If you are interested in the design, you may want to take a look at the Dutch national flag.
