Should I get a VPN for Xbox?
A VPN on Xbox seems like a no-brainer it's free, it increases my security while gaming on my internet-connected console, and it's easy to set up. (The biggest benefit is that it's free; you have to pay to get security benefits like extra layers of data encryption.) After a week of using the service on Xbox, here are three reasons I decided to buy a subscription instead:
1) There's just no free option that can match the performance of ProtonVPN. ProtonVPN was the clear winner on all my benchmarks. I tested two other VPN services, including a Microsoft VPN option that had been recommended to me before I bought my ProtonVPN account. I tested them all using WANem, a site that runs a range of free network traffic testing tools. (In the past, I've used these tests to compare Netflix performance between multiple ISPs, but I wanted to see what I could see on standard internet apps like Firefox, Chrome, and Xbox.)
Here's a graph that shows how ProtonVPN scored against two commercial VPNs, and the free Microsoft VPN, on a few speed tests. These tests are representative of what I saw when I used the VPNs. The results show that ProtonVPN outperformed all three on everything, and the gap between ProtonVPN and Microsoft's free VPN is substantial. (Note that Microsoft's VPN only offered IPv6 support both Windows and Xbox One only offer IPv4 VPN connections.) The other two VPNs were significantly slower than ProtonVPN.
In particular, ProtonVPN blew away the free Windows VPN option, offering more than double the download speeds on Netflix. For every other network traffic test I tried, ProtonVPN blew past both commercial products. As a comparison, here are the results for the free VPN option:
Microsoft VPN (6.3Mbps down, 0.9Mbps up) vs. ProtonVPN (25.5Mbps down, 10.2Mbps up)
WANem result summary. For me, that's plenty of reasons to switch to ProtonVPN for Xbox. If you're not sold yet, read on to see what the VPN can actually do for your internet connection.
Can I put a VPN on my Xbox One?
In the past I've only ever needed a VPN on my laptop when I travel.
When I'm in my home country, I use OpenVPN on my desktop and it's awesome. It's fast, reliable, and easy to setup. I can even run it on a headless server, so it's perfect for me. When I'm out and about, OpenVPN is great, but if I'm on an internet-free area it gets a bit annoying. I can't access any web-based services while I'm out, and that's a bit of a pain.
Then there's my Xbox One. It has a pretty good VPN service built-in, but you can only use it for online gaming. Since I live in Australia, this means I can only play games online from my home country, which is a bit of a restriction. So I tried to see if I could get around this by using a VPN. I thought I'd just go for it and get a VPN to work with my Xbox One, and see what happens.
Before I started I spent some time going through some articles on Google, trying to figure out if there was any kind of VPN-support on the Xbox One. I didn't find anything, and after a few minutes I gave up. I couldn't even find a simple how-to on how to enable it, so I thought I'd just try it myself. I know people are usually very busy and don't have time to do all these things, but I'm lazy, and you're lucky!
Why a VPN? I didn't really have a reason for it. I just thought it would be a fun thing to try. For me, the reason it was a lot of fun is because it was a completely new experience for me. Normally I use OpenVPN on my desktop when I'm travelling, so it's something I'm used to. I've also used VPNs on my laptops before.
However, I've never used a VPN on an Xbox One before. So for me it was completely new. It was also fun to see how it works, and I'll probably use it again in the future.
Can NordVPN be used on consoles?
I have to connect my Xbox One and PS4 to my home internet using wireless/wired connection.
Currently I'm using a VPN which makes the console look like my desktop which works great but it blocks some ports including the one used for game downloads on PS4.
I'm sure there are ways around this for consoles, could someone let me know? If so then what do you want me to say? How many times do I have to copy and paste exactly what has already been copied and pasted before you'll see the difference? Your ignorance is showing yet again. You're wrong because your post didn't answer my question. It just regurgitated the same point about console support without any explanation.
@Briarpatch: Do you even own a PS4? If so then get to the real reason why you're being such a dick. Do you want to be known as that ignorant kid who posts in the middle of the night and can't get off his fain ass to actually post a clear answer? If that's the case then no, because you won't make an effort to find out why I asked your question.
So by your logic I shouldn't have the right to ask questions on forums because you're the one sitting on a high horse while trying to pretend like you know all about something when you don't. What does your lack of understanding have to do with anything other than you're too ignorant to not post multiple times in the thread so you can prove yourself. I'm not ignorant, I can't read everything that's been posted by others. And I don't call everyone an asshole, just you. Because you called people jerks, and insulted them on here. So you're the one being ignorant. And not me, not everyone else, you.
What kind of proof are you looking for? I mean, obviously it wouldn't be possible for NordVPN to run console games perfectly. But if you want to believe that, then I wouldn't know what to tell you.
What VPN is compatible with Xbox One?
I heard of a good VPN that's compatible with Xbox One.
This is a paid VPN, I think it's around 5 a month. It offers good anonymity. Is this worth it? If yes, which is the best VPN for Xbox One?
Your statement is not quite correct. "The VPN service only allows VPN services to be connected in order for the device to be secure and hide your IP. So if you have something like a Netflix account you need to use this VPN to be able to access it."
So you will need to purchase a VPN service and then connect it to your account. With a 5 per month service, you are looking at a month on the service and a one off fee. You should compare the service against a normal broadband connection. If you want to stay anonymous then you need to use a Tor connection which would probably be the most secure method.
