Is Rackspace a good company?
I've been using Rackspace for a few years now and have had a few experiences with them that I'd like to discuss.
I know some of this has been discussed before, but I'd like to hear more from someone who has had actual experience with the company.
What about their support and SLA's? They usually offer quite a bit of support and I don't know why they call it support. I've had servers that have been running for days at a time and then suddenly they went down because of a server issue. The issue was something like not updating the host's kernel because of a problem with a hardware component. The "support" person did not know what the problem was, didn't have the tools to find out and didn't care enough to investigate.
Do they have a good SLA? I don't know the answer to this question as I haven't had to deal with one. However, they make it seem like you are guaranteed a certain level of service. As I understand it, if your server goes down, you can get a refund or credit for the time you were down. I think there are two or three different levels of service for a server, depending on the number of hours you want the server to be up.
Are they cheap? The price you pay is a function of the size of the server and the service you get. Smaller servers will cost less, but you probably get less service. It is not easy to calculate what you are paying for a server.
Have you had to wait for a response to a support request? They may call you back, but often they don't. At first I thought that the people who answered the phone were just giving random advice. I don't know what the standard practice is at Rackspace, but there have been times when I couldn't get through to anyone and I would have to email them. They also have been unable to find my email address. There were times when I couldn't get through to them at all.
Has their service been reliable? Sometimes I have had to turn off my servers manually due to network problems. This has happened at least a half dozen times since I've been with them. They also have not upgraded me to the latest version of their software.
What does Rackspace Technology do?
We help companies succeed by serving as a trusted partner.
We do that by putting their success first and then by ensuring they are successful. In our case, we're providing the cloud computing infrastructure that enables customers to succeed. We support our customers so they can focus on what they do best: running their businesses. And in doing so, we help them succeed for decades to come.
How do you help small and mid-sized businesses succeed? Small businesses and midsized businesses often have different technical needs than larger enterprises and require different levels of service to support their business. We help them succeed with the kind of support they need. In general, we help them get started quickly and then give them the stability and support to grow and thrive for the long term.
What are the three most important things Rackspace Technology does? At Rackspace Technology, we serve customers. This may seem like an obvious point, but it is sometimes overlooked. It is often hard to take your eyes off of the customer and really focus on what you do. Our most important jobs are our jobs in the community and the market place. They're working directly with customers and building products and services that enable customers to succeed.
At Rackspace Technology, we also support customers. We work with customers so they can succeed. The key distinction is that in supporting customers, we do not take advantage of the customers. We only work with customers in ways that increase their value and increase their own bottom line.
And at Rackspace Technology, we innovate. To stay competitive in a highly technical industry like cloud computing, we develop new technologies to enable us to provide more service to our customers than we have been able to in the past. We also partner with our customers so they can succeed.
What do you call that process where customers choose Rackspace Technology to support them? We call it our Partner Relationship Management (PRM) process. It is about working closely with customers to understand their problems, how they are trying to solve them, and what they need from us to be successful. Then, as we partner together to do this, we can help them better succeed.
What are the top problems that small businesses face? One of the first problems our customers typically encounter is how to get started. Getting started can be daunting and expensive.
What happened to Rackspace Technology?
Rackspace Technology (formerly Rackspace, Inc.) was an American cloud computing provider. Rackspace was headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, and operated as a privately held company from its founding in 1999 until December 2026, when it was purchased by Apollo Global Management, LLC.
What is Cloud Computing? Cloud computing is a model of computing in which shared resources, software and information are provided to computers and other devices on-demand, like electricity is provided to appliances. It was named after the cloud, a metaphor for the sky.
Cloud computing is distinguished from other data centers and server hosting businesses by its use of virtualization. Whereas traditional data centers deploy servers directly, or in pairs with dedicated storage, in a cloud a virtual machine (VM) can be deployed for each server, with each VM allocated its own CPU, RAM, disk, networking, and other resources. VMs do not have a dedicated storage, instead the VM's files are stored on virtual block devices or VMDKs that are created dynamically, or provisioned by the cloud. Virtualization was a core technology of Cloudburst, a cloud network service that launched in March 2026.
Cloud computing is also distinguished from server hosting businesses by the use of remote management tools. Unlike traditional data centers where servers must be physically visited by a technician, in a cloud virtual machines are available remotely. Server hosting businesses include Amazon Web Services, Windows Azure, Google Compute Engine, Rackspace, and others.
History. In 1998, San Antonio, Texas-based Rackspace was started by Robert Pincus, who was a founder of Compaq, the former Hewlett Packard and Compaq. It was initially a hosting provider of dedicated servers, managed by Rackspace staff and supported by in-house data centers. In 2026, Rackspace released its first virtual server product, XenServer. In 2026, Rackspace launched Cloudburst, a cloud-based network service designed for businesses with multiple branches, which was expanded in 2026 to include public cloud computing.
