Facing the Netherlands is probably not an easy task for most non-Dutch players, even if they do play soccer at the highest level. If you're from Europe, but don't live in the Netherlands, it will be a challenge in getting a passport to get there. There are so many other European countries than are better known to most. It will also be a big hurdle to get to the tournament in South Africa.
However, there is another country, that plays in the Eredivisie, which is the elite league of the Netherlands that will be more familiar for any casual sports fan. The team is Ajax Amsterdam, one of the best soccer clubs in the world. Ajax Amsterdam holds the record of 17 Dutch championships in their 110-year history. Not only that, but for 15 years Ajax remained undefeated.
The club has so much history with great players playing there and making the team a dynasty of great soccer. But with each passing year there have been more and more players who have surpassed these players. This current generation of players is already starting to make their mark in the history of Ajax.
The current top player on the Ajax is the striker, Hakim Ziyech. Ziyech is currently a Moroccan-born forward, but he was born and raised in the Netherlands. Since joining the youth academy of Ajax when he was 7 years old, Ziyech has been slowly developing into one of the best strikers in Europe. He is leading the league this season with nine goals, which is more than any other Amsterdam based striker. With such a young age, Ziyech only has room to grow.
So who exactly is Hakim Ziyech? How would you call him, which word best describes him? Let's take a look at some examples from his biography page: Name: Hakim Ziyech. Player Position: Forward. Nationality: Moroccan. Birth Date: June 4, 1999. Height: 1.86 meters Club History: Since joining the club at the age of seven years old, Ziyech has only gotten better. Every year it seemed like he was scoring more goals and developing.
Have the Netherlands won a World Cup?
Yes, in 1974.
No, in 1980. Well. It wasn't a win. The Netherlands made the world cup semis in 1974, but just lost to Brazil in a 3-2 thriller in extra time - which remains the worst World Cup loss ever.
There is one Dutch player on Fifa's world cup top 100 list - Robin van Persie. The Manchester United striker, 29, has had an extraordinary World Cup with six goals from his team-mates and two incredible scoring exploits on his own. He also created two of the team's three goals in a thrilling semi-final against Spain - after leading the way with an early goal in a match which ended 5-1. There have been seven Dutch goalscorers at a World Cup; five from the Dutch national side and two from Feyenoord, of which the Netherlands play today. Five of them - Guus Hetland, Marco van Basten, Rob Haastrecht, Johan Cruyff and Aron Winter - were international legends, who scored in World Cups and Champions League finals. There are four 'new generations' of Dutch strikers, but it is Van Persie's success that has captured the imagination.
The Dutchman has had great success domestically - winning Premier League titles at both Manchester United and Arsenal - as well as three in the Champions League. It makes Holland's World Cup squad an enviable one - with the only obvious absence being Van Persie himself. With Van Persie's career on course to take him to another level and into new personal milestones, here are ten facts about the player, the nation and how helped lead his team to a first World Cup semi-final this summer.
Is Netherlands and Holland the same team?
They have a long history in basketball, but the question arises - who is the team of Netherlands and who is the team of Holland?
Is there only one team? I always thought they were the same team, until I visited the basketball court in Arnhem, Netherlands (see image) - the home of the Groningen Eagles. The home of the Eagles has a similar floor plan, yet the logo on the court is that of the Dutch Basketball Association.
I have always believed that the team of Netherlands is the national team, but after visiting the court in Arnhem, I think that the national team of Netherlands and Holland are two teams with a similar color scheme, logo and team name. So, I would like to know the difference between the national team of Netherlands and the national team of Holland, and also between the Netherlands and Holland. (Thanks to our friend in Amsterdam for putting the images into one for us to see. Holland vs Netherlands
I agree! The Basketball Federation of Holland (KBVB) isn't part of FIBThey should use the team from the KBVB-Bundesliga as their national team, then the Holland national team would be the other side. That's a good point! I wonder if the FIBA team includes any players from the Netherlands clubs? I believe that the Basketball Federation of the Netherlands (KBVB) is not part of FIBA, thus, the national team of the Netherlands will be the national team of the Dutch Basketball Association (BvB). You guys are all over the place. The Dutch Basketball Association is not a member of FIBA, so the FIBA national team has nothing to do with the Dutch National team. FIBA is a member of the international basketball federation (IFB) which is responsible for the development of world class basketball, including the national teams.
The Dutch Basketball Association is the national team, no doubt about it, because they play a game that does not exist in most countries. I am proud of my country, its basketball, and the way it is being played. FIBA is irrelevant to this discussion, but it is a sport that has to be played internationally anyway.
Who is the all time scorer for the Netherlands?
After I wrote The Magic of Holland in August 2024, it became clear that there were many records, records that made it difficult to define the all time top scorer.
So I came up with a little questionnaire which in turn also resulted in this article.
With so many players playing from one national team it can be hard to come up with a definitive list. As you'll read below most of the top 10 lists have had much discussion, with even some players themselves coming into the mix and offering new names, such as Jan Wouters from the 1960's.
Before doing this, it is worth bearing in mind that each individual is part of a tradition, with most if not all having their roots back to the 50's when there was still just one national football team. It is not meant to detract from what came before them, but rather show the tradition and history that can be measured and appreciated on paper. The key thing is to compare their careers with those of the other national teams in their day, not just looking at their goalscoring. When people started talking about records for national teams I immediately thought about Johan Cruijff, whom we now call Dutch football history, a legendary captain and manager. It was only when I found out that he is the only player with over 1000 goals, that I realised he could probably go down as one of the all time greats for his nation. It's very interesting to realise that he had a better goal ratio than Brazil, Spain, Argentina or France. You have to admire him for his achievement, although I can't help thinking that he could also run rings around any of the current national teams.
My list will give a rough idea on how he achieved those goals (using his own method of recording his goals) and I might even add up my own records! After the list it's useful to see his statistics and achievements. Aert van Hemmen - 2566 goals (2nd in All Time). He played a lot in Belgium, Germany and Austria between 1953 and 1977, so it was possible to keep scoring for his country.
