Which browser is not safe?
What is the safest browser?
According to security company McAfee, as of December 2024, Google's Chrome has been confirmed the safe browser. Chrome is free and easy to use. It blocks pop-up ads and malware without your knowledge, and it automatically updates when new viruses are found. It also has a built-in antispyware tool and a phishing filter.
In contrast, Microsoft Internet Explorer was the most attacked browser in 2024, and Norton stated in January 2024 that Internet Explorer is the most commonly targeted browser. Windows users are required to install a plug-in to view Flash videos or other content protected by Adobe's Content Encryption Program, and many have not been updated in years. Norton even listed IE as one of the top 10 most unsafe browsers. Internet Explorer 9 is the latest version, but according to McAfee, it has not been confirmed to be the safest browser.
What about Mozilla Firefox and Opera? In October 2024, McAfee also identified Firefox as the safest browser for the Mac. However, according to Gartner, Firefox has the second-most reported vulnerabilities of all browsers, with over 40,000 reported in 2024. Mozilla maintains that it has "the most secure web browsing platform" because of the use of encryption and other security features. Other features include the use of Mozilla's own TraceMonkey JavaScript engine, which aims to speed up websites. According to Mozilla, its Firefox browser contains only 32 active backdoors, while Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Apple Safari all contain more than 1,000 active backdoors.
Opera also has some features that make it safer. Its built-in phishing filter, for instance, prevents malicious sites from stealing users' personal information. However, it is often criticized for its relatively low market share of less than 1% of all browsers, and lacks many features such as Adobe Flash support.
There are several browsers available for Apple computers. Safari is the only browser that uses Apple's Safari WebKit engine. Although Safari has an integrated search function, Internet Explorer is also a Safari browser. A report in 2024 by the Electronic Frontier Foundation said that the Safari browser is the "most secure web browser" for Mac users. However, another study indicated that it could be more secure than Google Chrome and Internet Explorer 10, but less secure than Firefox 3.7.
What is the No 1 safe browser?
We have heard from the world of Google that Chrome is the No 1 safe browser for Android, but on the desktop?
The answer: it depends on the website. Google's own Safe Browsing team has developed a Safe Browsing API that will help developers create better web applications. They have also released Chrome App version of the API, and have announced that they plan to roll out an updated version of the API soon.
In their blog post, Google claims that most websites are safe when accessed through Chrome, with a 2.7 percent risk rating.
Other browsers such as Firefox and Opera have not fared so well. However, Google has released a list of sites that are dangerous for users, which could be a good way to detect sites that are dangerous for you. Here is a list of top 10 websites that have been rated as unsafe in Chrome, with all other browsers combined. We are not going to tell you what the No 1 safe browser is, because every website is different, but we can at least give you some pointers. We have looked at the average number of unsafe websites per billion page views, and have excluded some websites, such as Google, for obvious reasons. And while we are on the subject, let's not forget that there are different ways to report a website. For example, there is a Chrome extension called No More Ransom that will warn you whenever you are about to visit a site that has been reported as unsafe.
So, without further ado, here is the list of top 10 unsafe websites, in the order they are on the list. YouTube.com Amazon.com Facebook.com Microsoft.com Apple.com PayPal.com com
Wikipedia.org Netflix.com Yahoo.com It is interesting to note that four of the top 10 unsafe websites are US-based. One would think that Google should be included in the top 10 list, but it was excluded due to the fact that the majority of its traffic comes from the United States.
Which is the secret safe browser?
We're all well and truly asking this question because there's no doubt it's a question of interest to a large number of us.
For example, it's just that some of the sites that I read that can get a little too interested in what I search for, Google, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and so on, are all about data mining. (Well, they say they aren't, but you can't be too careful.) That being the case, I need a safe browser, which is not exactly the same as a virus-free browser.
As far as I can tell, the two big browsers are Firefox and Chrome, with Edge being a distant third. Firefox is clearly the most popular but I'm still not sure whether Chrome will take off and become popular. But one thing is certain. The big advantage of both of these browsers is that they are based on Chromium (the open-source version of the Chrome browser) and so they can be used together and I'm sure that's important to many of us.
So I decided that I'd try out Edge for a week or two before making any firm decisions. Of course, I'm not going to look at the source code to tell if it's good or not. And, yes, there will be the occasional blog post about my experiences in the weeks ahead. So you'll know.
I'm going to be honest and admit that when I tried it out, I found it very hard to get my head round. You have to learn a new set of keyboard shortcuts (there are none on the Mac version) and if you're not careful, you'll lose data you were browsing, for example. Also, there are a lot of small things that I don't like, including:
It has a different icon from the other browsers. There's no bookmark icon for quick access. You can't see where you've navigated to in the address bar. There's no way of undoing a close action on a page (eg delete, back). There's no way of disabling ads (eg block, hide, ignore). I've seen a few sites that work fine on Chrome but not on Edge and vice versa. Some of the sites that I use every day look weird. For example, the New York Times site doesn't work properly at times and the BBC site goes crazy on me.
